Which Duck Breed Is Best for Pets?

@CoriM
I am so grateful that Honey's active/recurring infection has finally been eradicated. This past February would have been a year since it all started. It's been 6 months since the avian vet told me that the only option was to euthanize and there was no hope. I suspect the bone erosion and just the overall Pekin/duck gait causes a slight abrasion anytime her foot isn't bandaged. I don't want to go through the treatment process of active bumblefoot again if I can help it. I hate to subject her to constant bandages but the alternative is life threatening, so I choose constant bandages.
Wow! She is a big girl! I haven't weighed Honey in months so I should do that. You take such wonderful care with your ducks! It sounds like our ducks are in a very similar situation with their feet. Honey's foot pad is also enlarged but it's completely loose skin. That maybe part of the issue with constantly getting scraped if she's unbandaged. It's also more delicate skin I assume.
I just hatched 4 Call ducklings a little over a week ago. I'm super excited about them and have really enjoyed them so much. I'd like to add more so I'm considering contacting the amazing member that I purchased eggs from before for more eggs today. They're difficult to hatch artificially so I feel like I should fill my incubators up this time. I'd probably end up with too many at that point, hahaha! Hey, did I just say "too many call Ducks"? There's no such thing :love

Ahh I'm so sorry for replying so late! Things can certainly get hectic with the rescue centre 😅 I hope I can remember everything that @CoriM and @HeatherKellyB have said. I appreciate all of your shared experience:hugsWe have decided to hold off on getting ducklings all together for now. It's just a bit much and besides we are headed straight into a bitterly Cold winter😪 With regards to the niacin deficiency, I have some knowledge on that. We have wild ducklings (mostly yellow billed ducklings) that come into the rescue and they have to have B-co. Even if we do decide to get ducks, I don't think I have the time or energy to care for Pekin foot problems on top of everything else. So I may go for mallards or runners or even maybe Muscovys? But it won't be for a while. Thanks again guys!☺️

Hi everyone! So, for years, I have wanted 2 or 3 ducks of my own. We have plenty of space for them and everything to make them happy. But I would like to know which breed to go with. The breeders I am using have a variety to choose from. Obviously, my first choice that they have available is call ducks. But they are a bit too expensive. (Which makes me really sad cause they’re my dream ducks.😪) But they have many more to choose from:

  • Pekins
  • Black Runners
  • Mallards
  • Khaki Campbells
  • Rouens
Please let me know which one you think will be the friendliest, most playful breed since they will be our pets. (Also we don’t want skittish ones, since our dog loves birds and would want them to be
From my experience, Pekin and Swedish are my faves. Pekin are quirky and my pekin love attention my drake sticks out his tongue at the camera and when I yell his name he does a 'dance' but he does not like ducks who are not white. My Swedish are cuddly and want attention all the time but they are grumpy and breed racist. My rouens stick to themselves and my khaki Campbells were very skittish until they turned a year. I have had really sweet runners and really skittish runners from the same flock. I've personally have only had experience with wild mallards so I don't know about them..

I had Mallards and Rouens. My Mallards were more off standish and my Rouens that I got as three year olds from my boss are so sweet. I hatched out two two of their eggs. Their mate was a wild Mallard. One baby is a mallard and the other one is a Rouen. I clipped my Mallards right wing for one season and they never flew away even after molting and getting their feathers back in. I love my Rouens and sold all of my Mallards. I still have these babies though and am currently trying to hatch out more since my drake is gone now and I have the fertile eggs. Pekins have so many leg problems and often get bumblefoot for some reason. Good luck on your decision.

@Callender Girl they sound adorable! My chameleon’s name is Quinn lol.😁 I do think we may go with pekins. I have found another really nice breeder (a lot friendlier than the previous one and less expensive) who is willing to sell only 2 ducklings to us within 2 days of hatching. All the research I’ve done on pekins seems to sound promising. Any thoughts on them?
I do NOT recommend pekins since they can get lots of foot problems and all plus they are messier and tend to drink more water than other breeds. I recommend call ducks because they are WAY easier to care for
