Someone on here had the brilliant idea of using puppy pee training pads. I used them with my latest bunch of chicks and loved it. Now I've got some under my very young chicks and one with shavings on top under a broody nest.

This year I'm using pine and it's horribly messy. I have a friend that says all he's ever used is straw and he's never had a problem. Next time I'm using straw.

Based on what I have read all over and remembering when we had chickens on the farm, we went with Sand for our day old chicks and will continue to use the sand. It retains heat really well, soaks up moisture, easy clean up, no dust, no smell. I put paper over the sand at the start to avoid the chicks eatting too much sand and no food. I have slowly been removing more and more of the paper (the chicks are just over a week old). I am so impressed with this method and will always use sand going forward.
