Hey all,
I am getting chicks this year and I have found a person who has these breeds near me. I would like all different breeds, and all hens. Egg laying is kind of important, but I also like a pretty bird :). Any recommendations? Here is the list:
Lemon Cuckoo Orpington
Lavender Orpington
Blue Orpington
Splash Orpington
Salmon Favorolle
White Face Black Spanish
Buff Brahma
Light Brahma
Jersey Giant
White Leghorn
Brown Leghorn
Black Australorp
Aracauna
Rhoade Island Red
Speckled Sussex
Barred Rock
Columbian Rock

I would want 5-6, I would like them to be pretty calm, they will be in a run that we will move around so they can forage a little.

Aracauna, each bird has a unique pattern, they are great egg layers, and lay rainbow eggs at that, i bred some for a while, and they were alot of fun

I don't have any chickens (yet) but I have heard that orpingtons and brahmas are calm and lay well. Also Speckled Sussex are great layers, can tolerate confinement well or forage, and are stunning. Whatever you choose I think it will be great! :)

True araucana do not lay a rainbow of eggs and come in specific, recognized color varieties . Bird's fitting your description are often sold as araucana but are actually a mixed breed bird loosely known as Easter Eggers

Orpingtons are good, but dont lay quite as much as they are dual purpose birds, so tend to be a little bit bigger, same for brahmas... SS's are beautiful, and get whiter as they age, but lay white eggs; just whatever suits you best, and will be most happy with

I have a Buff Orpington right now, and she is the sweetest, but I have heard they can go broody, and they eat a lot! I probably will get a Speckled Sussex- they are so beautiful!

For a tractor setting (mobile coop/run) I would suggest any of the orpingtons, rocks, autralorp or Sussex
I was also thinking the Australorps and Rocks, I don't know how big the Australorps get though. Do you know if they are bigger or smaller than Orpingtons?
