What do ducks do in the winter they won’t be able to swim because the water would freeze would they be okay, I’m all new to this sorry
I live in Illinois, so it gets pretty cold here. My ducks have a handmade pen/run, with a rubber tub in it when it’s warm. When it starts getting cold, we replace it. We bought a bigger rubber feeder/water pan, build wooden stairs inside it, and put a water heater under it so the ducks wouldn’t have access to it/get caught in cords. I’ll upload a picture later. When it gets really cold, they get moved into the garden shed, in a smaller pen, that’s off ya ground and well insulated. I can’t remeber what we’re currently using, either it’s a smaller rubber pan, or a heated water bowl. But even without heat, they are in and out of it a lot, and that’s keeps it from icing over.

My call ducks keep their pools from freezing mostly because they are in them so often. It has to stay below freezing temps for several days before they ice over. But we rarely stay below freezing for more than a few days at a time. I sometimes pour a pitcher of hot water on top and let them play in the slush! :D

Call ducks do tend to naturally "pair up" moreso than other ducks, but I still would not advise an excessive number of drakes. Mine free range when I'm home, usually with whatever group of chickens I let out at any given time. They mostly stay separated and don't bother each other, but I did have one black copper marans cockerel that tried to attack my ducks. I never let him around them again. But I have lots of other roosters that have never messed with the ducks, and the ducks don't mess with them.

Google some videos of Call ducks quacking though. As has been said, the girls can get quite loud, but in my experience, its only short bursts, like when the flock gets separated and can't see each other.... or when I walk outside and they want OUT! lol My large Swedish ducks were much noisier all the time. Not quite as loud, but they never shut up.

If I just wanted a small sized duck and was starting over, I think I'd choose mallards. 3 hens and one drake.

Friendliness depends on getting them used to you as young ducklings. Mine don't want me handling them now, but they still get right under my feet all the time.
