Which to purchase: Tylan 50 or Tylan 200?

Hmm, doesn't seem like their suggested dosage would be the same amount for the 50 and 200 as they have written. The Tylan 200 is four times more concentrated, but they only half the Tylan 50 dose. It would be nice if they'd cite where they got that information, like the regular Wikipedia.

Here is the dosing I've come up with for the Medicine Chart I maintain. I think it's pretty valid, though the doses are rounded off a little & based on a 5-lb. bird.
There is info on my Fungal Infections page on giving medicine down the throat if you'd want to give some of the medicine that way.

TYLOSIN (Tylan)
--For soluble: Mix fresh water at least every 3 days. Don't mix with vinegar.
--Soluble form less effective on adults than young birds.
--Can give with thin needle into different spots in breast muscle or subcutaneously for 5-7 days.
*Tylan 50: Up to 1.6 cc. (This is a lot of fluid--May wish to split up-- some orally, &/or inject some intramusc. &/or subcutan.
*Tylan 200: 1/2 cc. (Tylan 200 is easier for chickens. Smaller dose required.)
--Can possibly give Tylan injectible orally instead of or in addition to injection, tho there has been speculation that this might cause throat damage?? You can try putting needle-less 1-cc size syringe well down throat almost to crop to try to minimize risk.
-Active for 8 hours. Can split dose into 2-3 times/day.--May cause pain at injection site & gastro-intestinal disturbance. Birds may be reluctant to eat or move very much.
* Injectible can cause minor damage to breast muscle. May be best to split dose up & inject into more than one site. Not recommended for meat birds.
Caution: Combining multiple Macrolides reduces effectiveness.

Yes it seems like it would be difficult to measure 0.0625 ml precisely and make sure that small of an amount ends up where it is supposed to go. I'll stick to the Tylan 50. I guess I was just curious as to why anyone uses the Tylan 200 for poultry (I have heard of several that do and I've seen it for sale at shows) and supposed there must be some benefit but perhaps not.
It doesn't need to be that precise, .06-.07 ml would be close enough and you're probably less likely to get an injection site reaction from it. However, it would require that one not have any air bubbles in the syringe. FWIW, I had to use the 50 on a hen and it left huge, nasty necrotic injection site sores on her breasts, but maybe they would have been less severe if I had use 1/4 the amount of the 200 instead.

This is why it's important to understand how to calculate doses based on mg per kg (written as mg/kg), but most people can't do the math, so websites often say stuff like that one does. Whenever possible, consult a vet for correct amounts.

I wonder though, would the 200 actually be more likely to cause necrotic tissue, simply because it is more concentrated? Sure you are injecting less actual liquid into the bird but it would have a much higher concentration that might cause more damage to the tissue. I guess it is hard to speculate without knowing exactly how the necrosis is caused - from the size of the injection, or from what is being injected?
Good point and Ihave no idea, lol. What I do know is that it left sores about the size of dime that were ~1/5" deep.

Yes, a good point to study! I've only used Tylan 50 &, like casportpony, had problems with the birds being very sore when I injected the large quantity required with Tylan 50. I later split dosing between injection sites & orally (far down the throat to try to avoid the throat damage I have read may be possible when giving Tylan by mouth) and the birds seemed to be less sore & depressed.

That's why I suggested (& yes, those were just personal suggestions of mine) on my chart to split dosing sites, or use the Tylan 200 so less volume is required. But I don't know if the greater concentration would be detrimental... I will try to remember to add a note about that consideration on the chart. Thanks for sharing thoughts!

I just had to give mine injections and I felt so bad because I know the needle HURT. If I can give the Tylan 200 orally I would be much happier, and I think they would be as well. Also my girls are all smaller. I have 4 that are of laying age, but all others are smaller. Also, most have not moved from the coop they are all just sitting there. Looking very unhappy. They are very sick and I have already lost 1. Please help!

Welcome to BYC! I have not used Tylan except for that one time, but if I use it again I will give it orally twice a day.
