White Cornish: Building a Quality, Sustainable Flock for Meat and More.....

Pics
No Frank, to tell ya true I rarely start with plans.... more of a goal.... the bator plans I showed you were drawn a year after I built the last one for a guy that wanted one like it....
The double pen with the blue roof is 5-6 years old now and built for butler bobs.... I could separate 6 pairs or trios or open it all up for a colony situation. Works well for rabbits, chukar and chickens too thou... if you'll notice the 5" or so under the doors.... yeah that's the best part of theses pens. Without it, if that was all open, you'd be amazed by how many birds will blast past your head as you handle them....

I had built an enclosed walk in pen with a hanging cage for the cots just for escapee's. I think the main Bob population is going to need a similar set up. Once they get past you.... :wee:he

FD, have you found any GOOD info on associated characteristics that could help screen for eye color? I know that there could be untold gene combinations waiting to express! I'm wondering if you start looking at a combination of scale, comb and egg shape and color if there will be a hint of what might develope. Gonna have to get ahold of some of my friends in the oriental game crowd..

Actually man I'm amazingly uneducated on the subject... I do watch my birds as they grow out thou. But ya never know if what I see is normal or something I have caused thru culling and breeder selections iv made....The only clue iv have noticed is the ones that hatch showing the silver/blue down. Recessive gene traits, tend to be good eyes and fewer color flaws. The rest does not show till they're much older. But it seems the ones that stand out at 8 weeks, generally stand out at 20 as well. The color flaws that pop up in the silver down chicks is usually a black feather. Commonly in the covert wing feathers.... most of the time it disappears by the final molt. But I put them in the meat pen before then anyway.

Well Sasso offers light Sussex as slow growth breeder males.

I sure hope no one thought I was implying there's ignorance on this thread. I sure wasn't at all.
My light Sussex have a ways to go before they become meat birds. not far but a ways .what I was talking about is latest research they're talking about . In ovo feeding of the broilers. giving them a meal before they're hatched. It's fascinating . also all of the supplements that they're developing to encourage the gastrointestinal tract development and prevention against disease during the first 12 days . it's fantastic . so much here we can use on our dual Heritage breeds like the Sussex . I'm really excited about it.
Best ,
Karen
