Hello! Ok so this is my first time hatching duck eggs. I have 9 that I know are alive by candling and they are moving, but some have different hatch dates. I have one egg on day 27, no internal pip but still moving around. That one is on lockdown. My question is: i would say about 10-15% of the egg at the small end is still a yellowish color. From my research it sounds like the whole egg other than the air cell should be filled with ducky by now. I tried to take a pic but in pics it does look all black, but not when I candle it. So I'd say about 40% is air cell (slanted) then 50% ducky and the last 10% a yellow color. Is this normal?? I know it's alive right now but I'm freaking out it won't hatch. I know I have my temps and humdity correct. Just wondering if that's what the egg should like at this point. Thanks so much.

You have a sticky issue, he didn't break the yolk, he couldn't absorb the yolk because of all the water inside.

Did you Mist the eggs at all during incubating time??

I don't see any deformity, I believe the humidity was to high, if it was at 50-60 during the first part of the incubating period until Lock down, that's a little to high, if it was at 50*55 and they got misted, they would have been OK.

the only way to keep it that high is to mist them, I believe by misting them three times a day this helps, evaporates moisture inside. Another option is not to add water at all.

I have my bator on and I don't add one single drop of water but My humidity stays at 20%, Lowering the Humidity will solve the sticky issue.

Do you have a fan? I can't remember if I read if you had one or not. if not, then the temp is to low, should be around 101-102

There are FOUR causes of Sticky embryos:

1. high humidity seems to be the most likely
2. to low of temp
3. Ventilation
4. In proper cleaning of bator between hatching's..

When a baby gets sticky they basically can not absorb or escape and the gooey devil, it does suffocate them.

I see you had different due dates for different eggs. now my next question would be do you have TWO bators, if not, then I wouldn't touch the humidity at all.

You see when you have different due dates and one bator, your locking the other eggs down early, so they are getting the high humidity and will become sticky, it ends up being a remake of the first problem..

Ducks can escape and do just fine without high humidity. 85% is High, I had 10 eggs in my bator and at lock down, I had mine at 80% and I lost all 10 babies. 60-65 is just fine..

There are some things that could have been tried before lock down to help with those sticky babies. I have experimented with sticky issues so that I can come up with a way to solve the problem once the problem has already occurred, my experiment is not set in stone yet. Which basically means it's not a guarantee that the embryo will survive but I can tell you out of two hatching's that it's been tried on, both babies have survived... So there is SOME hope. I am not suggestion that's its OK to continue to have sticky babies because of possible resolution, not saying that at all.. I'm saying once the damage is done, there is a Possibility to help.

I would strongly suggest, at all cost, to avoid a sticky embryo, correct what is already wrong..

Update day 29: no internal pip. Still just pushing on membrane

@lacrystol, I really appreciate your response. You are an angel. My first two eggs did die before hatching, no internal pip. I did eggtopsy on both. The second was obvious, the brain was on the outside of the skull (they are crested ducks). The first looked underdeveloped. Now I'm on my third egg. It's on day 29 and still no internal pip. It has been pushing at the membrane for 48+ hours. I started a new thread in the hatch curating and hatching forum about it, but if u see this first I don't want to miss out on your opinion! Yesterday, when it had been pushing for more than 24 hrs, I had two people suggest assisting it and two people assist leaving it alone. I chose to leave it alone, really hoping for an internal pip by now. Now it's 48+ hrs later and still nothing. His pushing actually seems to be less intense. But at the moment he is still alive. Yesterday he was pushing like crazy! Today just a little. I'm worried I'm going to lose him too . I'd love to have any advice you can give me.

Oh really? A safe hole...ok. Im really nervous. Should i just do the shell or should i try to get his beak through the membrane?
