We raise Anconas, another of the Italian layers. The two more or less the same thing. Although they are not large, the 12-13 week old cockerels make fantastic spatchcocked birds for the the grill, and 'tis the season. We have been enjoying them all August. They're certainly one of my favorite meats. I could (and do) eat them all year. We have to remember that size is not a statement of, or at least not the only, statement of quality. If you get into spatchcocking your cockerels, you'll really enjoy them. Besides, it's really easy to do, it allows you to hatch in number so that you can select your very best birds to the Standard.
Thanks for reviving this thread! I have white leghorns and really like them. I was told by several people not to get them because they were so flighty. Mine are active, yes, but flighty, no. They are not aggressive toward the other flock members and will hang around if we sit outside with them. I ordered Exchequer leghorns from MyPetChicken, due to arrive next week. Does anyone keep them?
I have five white leghorns and they've really grown on me, they don't pick on my other birds at all.
and I just got two exchequer leghorns in the mail today, they are so sweet! They've been getting trampled all day so as soon as you pick one up it falls asleep <3

Nice chicken! I couldn't help but wonder when Leghorns became forgotten? I lose to birds that look like yours often enough that I can't forget them.

Me too! I have three WL and they are my favorites. If I don't see three BIG white eggs in the nestbox each day I start looking in the bushes since my girls never ever miss a day! They laid all winter too.
I just got 5 pullets a month or so old. I am hoping to get 12 hatching eggs soon for my incubator. Sounds like I am going to like them. How big are the eggs usually?
