do you believe Show stock to be more hardy than hatchery stock? somehow I believe it could go both ways.

Er--what I mean is breeder stock that has been bred right, i.e. it has been bred for hardiness and for the general standard for the breed, not all of the exact points. I have heard enough about SQ birds to start to realize that they can be a bit too glamorized to fit the breed's general standard, and that their hardiness can sometimes suffer because of it.

Heck, let's just say I honor stock that is pure, hardy, and well-suited for its intended purpose

Thanks. I figured she would work it out eventually. She is young still. I give her unlimited access to oyster shell & I switched her to Purina Layena with omega 3 this past weekend. She's so pretty. Is a messy rear fluff feathers typical of white leghorn pullets?

Leghorns lay so well that you don't need that many. I have a couple that were from my first batch of chicks a couple of years ago. The one stopped laying after her second year, but the other is still going strong. I am so amazed every day I collect its JUMBO egg that it came out of that tiny bird. When my birds see me coming, GUESS which birds runn the fastest and are at the first of the line to get treats - - Yep, that is right THE FLIGHTY leghorns are FIRST !

I may have to get me one or two chicks this spring.... just to replace the one that quit laying after the first year

I've been tempted to try a couple of these myself next spring. Does anyone have a preference which hatchery to get them, based on overall quality and vigor?

They run so fast, and are so silly sometimes. I love them. My two leghorn girls are also very vocal during leg laying time. It so sweet, and yes big eggs - daily during the warmer
months - from such small birds. I have had several double yolks too.
