Whizbang pluckers

Buildt one last year. It is great. Sure does the job. If you buils on i would use a piece of 1/2" plastic for the plate because it is so much easyier to drill. Very stury.

We are around $500 but were in a hurry and bought a new motor that was half the cost. I'm sure if you have time to salvage parts you could build cheaper.

Very well worth the time and expense. If you are a scrounger, most of the parts can be found, leaving the fingers and possibly motor/pulleys as the biggest expense. We have helped friends process birds they wouldn't have raised if it were not for the plucker, helping them out too. Consider it a long term investment, and the cost over the years will be minimal, labor savings is priceless.

there was a member that had volunteered there copy of the wizbang book to loan out. She sent it to me, i used it as a guide to build mine and then forward it on to another BYC member.

i bought fingers and pulley from Herrick ~$150
i had a motor in stock i used. (if you have to buy one expect $100+)
barrel tub was $10
1/8" AL plate for feather plate $20
1" cold rolled steel shaft $10
pillow block bearings $34
link belt $30
misc hardware $30
(i used 2x4 i had laying around)

id say i have $300 in mine.

but that could easily be 400-500 if you have to buy a motor and pay for shaft welding (neither of which i had to do).

I hope to rent mine out for a reasonable fee to help recoup cost

Either way, we have used ours 3 times now and it was worth every penny the first time we used it.

Well worth the time building and the expense of materials. I had right under $500 in mine, but $178 of that was in the motor. We plucked over 600 birds with it this year and it's still going stong. In my mind, it's already paid for itself.

I just ordered mine, and the same day I got an email that it was being shipped. I priced it all out and it was easier to buy the Wizbang kit and have everything i need and proven then to run here there and everywhere trying to find the parts. I even emailed the company with a question and received an immediate response. So far I am very impressed with the company

I love ours!! My husband built it last year however, there was a guy on eBay selling pre-made/pre-dilled kits. Of course we bought one and it came with the origiinal whizbang book along with the fingers as well as the drum, the meddle disc welded and ready to go. The drum and plate came pre drilled and welded and all we had to do was put the plucker fingers in. Hubby just had to buy a motor, pully, build the frame and voila!! Love at first switch!! I would never go back to hand plucking ever!! I can literally have 2 -3 birds done in 30 seconds!! It's fantastic and well worth it.

I think it ended up costing around $500 at the end of it, but the first year I hand plucked I knew that if I was going to do chickens again, that I would NOT be hand plucking. Once we cooked one of our homegrown birds, that's when we knew that the I had to have the plucker. Now we do birds for us and immediate family all in one day! I'd say if anything is going to deter you from doing chickens again, it would be the plucking by hand. So this is definitely an investment for sure. I know a lady down the road that rents hers out $50 for the weekend.
