Who else got some 2013 chicks?!

Was only going to pick-up a couple chicks this year.....ended-up with 15. No longer allowed to go to the feed store unattended.

Yep. We only need to add 4 to the flock but I got 8 "just in case" and had a 100% survival rate which I suspect is due to their being locally hatched. Posted on Craigslist to find coops for the four extras but I am not happy about it.

Just picked these up this morning (I have 10 more coming from the hatchery on May 22)
700

These girls are silkies and born 3-12-13.

Question - Can I put these babies in with my flock? My girls are about 5 months old now....

You know, they would probably be ok, but they can get bullied pretty bad form the full-grown chickens. When you add them, it disturbs the pecking order they have already established. Even though these new chicks aren't a threat, the chickens still need to drive the point home that they are dominant. One option I've heard is to get them a container, --like a rubbermaid tub-- and cut a hole out that the young birds can fit through, but the large ones can't. This way, if the youngsters have any trouble and want a break, they have a safe place to hang out. Start them in this container so that they know it's there.

we picked out our four little girls today (they have been sexed and we hope they were right b/c no boys allowed here).
5 and 8 days old.

We're still figuring things out.

Quick question...I ordered from McMurray Hatchery. I have read some bad reviews about chicks DOA. Should I be expecting dead chicks?

I placed my first time orderc ever with McMurrays. I ordered orpingtons and their frying pan special, to test the waters. We received all of our chicks plus 2 extras healthy and very mouthy! I arranged for our babies to come at the end of April. Next year we are going to try mypetchicken as well but only because i think i can just drive there. It's a couple hours from home. 2 weeks later, we did lose one chick but the other 26 are thriving!

I got mine the week after Easter. I bought mine from the local farm supply in the area.

6 Buff Orpington
6 GLW two which died due to coccidiosis
13 Araucana aka
5 Black Jersey Giants
1 Don't know yet. It came with the Giants and I am still trying to figure out what breed it is.
Thinking it might be a Black Polish Crested.

These are my first chickens. It has been a lot of fun so far. Except the two that died. But that's farm life as I have been told.
