Who else got some 2013 chicks?!

Finally got my babies.

I'm really mad at the post office for losing them. Several arrived DOA and many others are not looking very good a lot of the girls won't even stand up.

I am now pumping them with water and petilyte every 30 minutes hoping to save them. Does anyone have any other suggestions? I called the hatchery, who is more than happy to replace them but they were really upset just like I am.

I got 45 new babies on May 18th from Murray McMurray. I picked them up at USPS distribution center, so they were only 24 hrs old. 15 red rangers, 5 Easter Eggers, 5 red laced blue wyandottes, and the rest are all mystery chicks. I have no idea what they are. 1 week old tomorrow. Lost 2 red rangers, but everyone else is looking good.

I have 6 RIR bantams 8 EEer bantams from Cackle and 6 EEer bantams from Meyer. Unsexed babies that I hope are at least half females. The 14 in the first batch are skittish and nervous with any sudden movement or noise. They scatter like no tomorrow and that has continued as they are now 4 and a half weeks old. They will get near if I sit perfectly still but any movement and boom they are gone to the other side of the pen. Very disheartening since I did try to play with them early on but they never really took to me. They gathered up around the thermometer like it was their momma. One of the EEers has cross beak and I can't catch the little sucker to trim the beak at all or to check it for other issues. They are in a bigger brooder and limits my ability to catch them now without traumatizing the whole flock.

The 2 week olds from Meyer though, these babies love to perch on my hand especially if I have a little feed. I end up with most of them in my palm trying to climb up my arm. They are super friendly and don't seem to be afraid of me. They do not love the thermometer like the others did. I think they think I am their momma. At least I hope so because I wanted some lap chickies for when I am sitting in the shade under the trees with them.




I can't let the others out of the big pen until I can sex them. No way I'm chasing them all over my yard once I can find homes for the roosters in the bunch. I'm a bit scared to mix these 6 with the other 14 because of size difference and temperament difference. I don't want the 14 turning these cuddly fluff balls into nervous ninnies too.

We had ordered 15 chicks from My Pet Chicken, 3 Black Silkies, 2 Silver laced Wyandottes, 2 Easter Eggers, 2 Speckled Sussex, 2 Blue laced Wyandottes, 2 Plymouth barred rocks, and 2 Golden laced Wyandottes (we had originally ordered 2 blue Cochin but they didn't hatch out). Of those one silver laced arrived DOA, the silkies went next, then the Sussex We ended up going to Metcalf's and getting 10 more, 2 RIR, 2 buff Orpington, 3 "Araucana"(I think they are really just Easter Eggers) and 3 silver laced Wyandotte. This was the week of May 6th, they are doing great now and are SO fun to watch. We have 2 adult New Hampshire Reds and 12 adult black sex links as well. We are going to build a bigger coop/run so everyone can be under one roof eventually. I love the little ones personalities, and I am enjoying the guessing game of what they are going to look like when they grow up. They are supposed to all be female, keeping my fingers crossed!

YAY for fuzzballz!! lol...

I just got some last week, three Silver Laced Wydonettes, one Ameraucana and five Columbian Wydonettes. I just put them all in the same box last night (Columbians came from a different breeder). I had one weak one after she fell in the water dish one night, but she seems to be doing better now. I'm loving having them in the house and will probably take my time getting their coop ready LOL. Columbians gotta be the cutest darn chicks with their softly colored foliage lol.

On March 1st we got two Silver and two golden Wydonetts, two buff Oppingtons and two Marans, one French one English, all hatched locally.

One of the Silvers and one of the Buff turned out to be roos but I found a guy with ten acres, ~60 hens and one aging (one eyed) roo who took them both for $15.00 and so far it's working out. Our son took one golden Wydonett and the English Maran to his house in Portland and the remaining four chicks/pullets went out into the coop about 3 weeks ago and while they are still skidish with the hens they are doing well in our existing flock.

All 13 of my chicks purchased 2-5 days old on March 15th and March 17th are still doing great! Definitely teenagers now, and it looks like only one rooster, a Buff Orpington named "King". A few pics below. With 12 hens I should have more eggs that I want come August or September!

"Racer", one of our easter egger pullets. The smallest and youngest of our chickens, but very fast and a graceful flyer! Friendly too.
