Who Else Has A Broody In January!?!?!

I broke my marans by just taking her eggs then calling her off the nest for scratch. She went into molt and stop trying to set on nest with no eggs. I just didn't want any babies out side with the cold weather. I'm sure she will again in spring hopefully she will lay some of her dark eggs to hatch out also.

One of our BOxNHR hens decided to sit, so I gambled on giving her 11 little white rock bantam eggs that I was waiting to set while six other eggs were in the bator. No go, no dice. She gave up after 3 days on the eggs, six days total of sitting.

I put the eggs in the bator, even though I had not origionally wanted a staggered hatch. Hoping some are going to make it.

we have a buff hen that has decided to sit 4 days ago i felt under her and she has around 5 eggs under her i put 4 more under her yesterday and she is still sitting only prob. is her nest is about 4ft off the ground if the clutch hatches this would be a prob? is it possible to move them and her now or will she reject therm if moved? allready have eggs hatching right now in bator so thats not an option

bantyhen, sorry your hen gave up so easily.

I know what you mean about staggered hatches, I'm so glad to have a hatcher and incubator set I don't have to worry about that, I can just toss eggs in anytime. In fact I might have put 9 eggs in today.

They were two weeks old and it was that or throw them out, I couldn't do THAT. lol

Crazy Rooster, I hope someone who knows can help you, I would personally wait until the chicks have hatched just in case. Seems to me like she might not go back to setting unless she is really dedicated. Someone once told me that the chicks are fine to jump from some distances :O No idea how far but not sure I would risk it.

Ploof, my white silky hen is broody, but i am not ready for her to hatch. I couldn't believe it when I heard here make her mad mama noise at me and wouldn't get out of the egg box! Ploof......it is january!!!!

Callie and Cetawynn are still sitting on their eggs. The white silkie gave up. I had one chick that died in the egg and somehow it got a crack. Thankfully the smell alerted me and I was able to dispose of it before it exploded. I hate the waiting, it is so hard. They should be hatching on the 27th and it feels like million years away. This weekend we have to put up a temporary chicken wire frame around the area they are in so the babies and momma's are safe for a week or two from the other chickens. My black silkie hatched out 1 baby chick around Christmas and another hen pecked it to death. My fault though, I let her have a staggered hatch set of eggs under her and she didn't want to leave the still-to-be hatched eggs to protect the new baby.

This time I gave the girls 8 eggs all laid on the same day and marked them, and I have been taking any new eggs that find their way under them since. I will be sure to post picks of any new babies.

I have had several that tried to go broody on me in the last month. I was able to break all of them except 1. So I moved her to a hatching pen and gave her a couple of mutt eggs to see if she would stay and she did. So on wednesday night, 1-19, I gave her 12 CC Maran eggs to sit on. Have been trying to increase my # of CC marans. When I bought them they were 18 months old so I know I dont have a super long time to replentish them with chicks so I have been trying to use the inky but not . Since the broody was determined I decided to let her try some.
