Congratulations on your successful hatch.

We just went out today and cordoned off a section around our 2 broodies in preparation for the 27th. I'm so excited.

I have a 7 month old Serama that went broody. At first I kept taking her eggs and figured she would give up but she didn't. So I left her with two eggs and they are due to hatch next week, I hope. Her "sisters" keep moving her out of the way to lay so I have to collect their eggs everyday.

Today is hatch day and we have 6 baby chicks with one more egg to go! I was so happy to go out there today and hear little cheeps.

One of my stupid polish crested hens laid a white egg under them sometime in the last 3 days so really there is only one egg left to go.

Update,
I took out the one egg left this morning and gently opened it, it was just yolk inside. I was so relieved. So outta 8 eggs, we had 1 with no development, 1 died early, and 6 hatched. That's a 75% hatch rate. Woohoo! Go little silkie mamas.

That is awesome lilmissfarmerchick!! Way to go momma! What breeds are the chicks, any EE's in the mix?

Faith Hope the eggs should be okay, I would probably leave them. I mean how much gunk is on them? If it is only a small amount I would personally leave them.

Livinwright she is actually a buff brahma x EE mix. The daddy was white and she came out looking like that. Isn't she gorgeous? I just love her!
(Not sure if I said this already but your dark brown EE's are simply gorgeous)

My Ameraucana hen has been snoozing at night with my broody. Still no eggs from her so I'm not sure if she knows just what a nesting box is all about yet! IT'S NOT A BED SILLY CHICKEN ARRGH!

I've had a half-dozen silkies & cochins go broody in the past month. I've broken all but two. I gave up on the last two cochins & bought them some d'Uccle eggs (no rooster here).

My flightiest Polish Crested stole two eggs from a cochin three days ago, moved them to the adjacent nest box, and has been brooding dutifully ever since, which I find incredible.

Has anyone else had a Polish go seriously broody, especially with ice & snow coming down outside?

Congrats Roncrna, what a great pic!

bantyshanty it seems this is the year of the winter broodies. I really thought that winter was the wrong time for chickens to go broodie, but they don't seem to have gotten the same message.

cluckcluck42, the little chipmunk looking one is definitely an EE. I have one silkie, 2 buff orp/EE cross, and the others I have no idea until they feather out. We have Silkies, EE's, Polish Crested, Mille Fleur D'uccle's, and Buff Orpingtons so the mixes could be very interesting. I'm finally down to just 4 roosters and 9 hens. The 4 roosters are: Magnus (EE), Einstein (Polish Crested), Colonel Mustard (D'uccle), and Spot (Silkie). I have 3 Buff Orpington Hens (no names), 4 Silkie Hens (Callie, Cetawynn, Black Betty, and one no name), 1 EE Hen (Francine), and 1 D'uccle Hen (Honey). I can't wait to order more this spring. This year I want more silkies, we are ordering a large chicken coop from greenchickencoop.com for them so I can have a silkie coop. I also want to order some Isa Browns, Blue Laced Red Wyndottes, and some LF Cochins. I'm so excited. Although I don't know if I want to order eggs or chicks. I think I have to do both because the only ones I plan to get from Townline hatchery are the Isa's and the rest I want to get from private breeders. Spring is such an amazing time, it's like Christmas for me.

You know I get so excited with mutts, I have some growing out right now and it's such fun to see who might the daddy be and even better who might the mommy be!

I can't wait to go into the coop and see some babies popping out from under her!
