it gives me hope!

Is there any corolation between diet, weather, other factors and egg laying?

ME TOO!!! STILL WAITING!!! Got home this morning, did my daily ritual egg check....and I think I heard them laughing AT ME!!! Then one whispered "NEVER"! (I think...when I turned back around they were all acting innocent..but I swear they plan to hold those eggs in forever!)

I FEEL YOUR PAIN!!!

My 21 chickens about 19 weeks. Starting a few days ago-I tried putting either shavings, grass, or hay in their laying boxes along with a golf ball and within hours the hens have tossed out all the bedding. Should I quit or keep on bedding the boxes? They all seem to "visit" the boxes regularly and I am starting to hear them sing the egg song... So excited to see the first egg!

Can anyone tell me all of the signs that a hen s ready to lay. So far they are way more vocal, and they have extremely red combs and wattles.

Sadly we are not able to free range, but we give tons of weeds, grasses and stuff around our place and recently switched to layena. I also feed our scraps from the kitchen- they have been getting lots of melon rinds and what falls from the high chair. I was extremely surprised to find the first egg, we had removed the nests to paint them and there you go.

I did start feeding oyster shell around 17 weeks to "prepare" them lol.

I'm taking it that if they don't have their red combs and wattles in yet there is ZERO chance of an egg, right? We haven't put our nesting boxes in yet since they are only 12 weeks old PLUS there's only a bit of face redness coming in. Can we wait to install the (external) boxes until they start sprouting the 'big girl' accessories?

I was thinking we'd put it on when they hit 15-16 weeks (just in case) or sooner if they mature suddenly..

(these are leghorns and RIR, big time egg layers).. I can't wait!
