I sure hope they lay in their nesting boxes, though.

Have you put fake eggs in their nest box? You can get wooden ones from the craft store pretty cheap, some people use golf balls. I mention this only because it really does seem to work to tell them where to lay.
My breed is known as slower than most to start laying so I thought I had another month to get their nest boxes done. Instead one started early and I had an egg a day in odd corners, somewhere different every day. I rushed to build two nest boxes and put a couple of wooden eggs ($1.50 for 4) in each side of the box. Ever since then, they have laid their eggs in the nest box, no stray eggs.
It sounds really silly -- wooden eggs -- but it sure worked.

If you mimic the egg song, they might be wondering where you laid your egg​

MIFChick sang the egg song today and my husband heard it. No eggs.

Loopy Bird 1 & 2 (the brown leghorns) are picking up the egg song slowly. MIFChick is doing the egg squat in front of Robbie the Rooster who doesn't know what to do with her yet.

The other roo, Crooked Toes is crowing. He's given up trying to romance unresponsive hens in his pen and is settling down a bit.
