mine try to fly too but dont leave our yard. but you souldnt have to trim there wings if they fly away they will usally not go far or come back because you feed them and they were born there

No. Muscovy definitely have a tendency to fly away and go to large water sources like ponds and lakes. Clipping their flight feathers is a precaution that a lot of Muscovy owners like me take because even if they don't want to leave, flying is very fun and it is easy to get carried away. Then they find a big pond or lake with other ducks in it and try to make it their new home. One of my girls named Puffin flew away about 7 or 8 months ago along with her 4 siblings and I never saw any of her siblings again, but I found her at a local park about 6 months after she flew away and was able to bring her back home. Even after I brought her back home as soon as her flight feathers grew back, she flew away again for a couple days and then finally came back to the same park again where I was able to take her back in again.

I like muscovies! Right now I have mallard derived breeds, but eventually I'd like to have muscovies.

With muscovy, I have heard both stories. People have them and they fly around, but never leave them. But some, as soon as they can fly, they take off.

I was thinking since my Muscovy are 8-9 yrs old they wouldn't fly out of the fence. Well they probably wouldn't if the weren't being bullied by the geese. So They got a wing clipped. We live with woods surrounding us and I don't want to take a chance on losing one to a predator.

We live in the city for now, so I don't have a choice. Either I clip those flight feathers or my neighbors get visitors. And their dogs get visitors. We did have a female visit a back yard New Years Day 2020... Luckily we were able to hop the 6' wooden fence and get her back in our yard without issues and it was a very nice and understanding neighbor. And our very large male managed to fly over the front fence once as well. I still do not know how he got his big butt off the ground to do it, but he did. He then proceeded to sit in the driveway and wave at everyone passing by. So, yeah, clipping is essential.

And even when I move out into the country by next year, we will still clip. We love our babies and there are way too many creatures, 18 wheelers, and hazards around for them to meet and greet. We will have a 6ft no climb fence with an angled top to keep most terran predators out, (they sleep in a pen/barn). I can try to control as much as possible to what gets into my immediate yard, but I cannot control what is outside my border. We love our feather babies way too much.

Right now we have only two ducks, both Muscovy’s and I love them!! My family isn’t a fan so the ones we are going to hatch are a few other breeds but peepers is hatching them herself!! The first photo is Fiona or we call her fefe for short and then the second photo is peepers and then one of them taking a swim together and one time where we found fefe when she was younger, had flown on top of her old cage instead of in lol. We have clipped both of their wings as there has been two times were peepers would fly around and ended up on the other side of the fence in the woods and couldn’t get back in, so no more mischievous flying around for them. I have some better photos but they aren’t on my phone
