Who is getting eggs?

I'm sorry:(

While I was away at the store today, my husband said he got to watch the strange site of peas mating! Maybe we'll see eggs sooner than I thought. I'm also hoping I'll have a broody hen to incubate those eggs as I've had better luck that way!

I've got a guinea hen that is broody she tries to set on every thing she can!

Margaret8,,it's none of my business but I went thru the same issues on some birds last year. And the few pens I changed rations on last year I had no issues with dying chicks. I've spent time (hours) talking and e-mailing 2 feed nutritionalists,,one works for Nutrena and the other for Hubbard. Both have PhD's and are in charge of special rations. One thing I have found out from them is the feed the hens eats directly correlates to hatchrates and strong chicks. Trace minerals are paramount,as with my current ration there is absolutely NO calcium in it unless I add it. There is no calcium in soybean meal, fish meal, corn, sunflower seeds, milo and red millet which are all the main ingredients in my raton.
I read on a webpage the other day(I'm sure they are the webmaster for the UPA) to feed a 30% protein ration to peafowl. I don't know who,or where they came up with that number but if you like throwing money away on a ration that will cost 1/3 more compared to a 20-22% protein ration,,have at it and use their prescribed protein recommendation. But it is WRONG,,,I was feeding a commercial bagged layer crumbles last year and it failed me badly. It's now close to ten months later and I know all the asking-writing-calling I have done will make a very big diffrence this year. Several items I use in my ration are not available in bagged feed and both these men looked at what I was feeding, and both made the same recommendations and noted what exactly I was lacking. A 16% ration is fine during the winter protein wise but a 30% ration results in the extra cost getting pooped out daily,,,unneeded vitamins and excess protein does not hurt peas, they will just expell what their bodies don't need.

Was it's head tucked under or over it's right wing and where were the feet? You say it wasn't shrink-wrapped, did it look *too* wet? If so, that's called sticky.

First of all I fee 28% protein game bird crumbies and they free range. The head was tucked under the right wing. It was wet as was expected. The feet were tucked up under the head. I was told not to touch it. It piped and and about 12 hours later it broke the outer membrane. Once it broke through it started peeping. It did this about 24 hours at the same time it broke more of the shell, so I waited another 24hours. It could breath ok but I noticed the peeping started getting weaker. Then it died about 4 hours later. The same thing was happening to this egg. Only thing is when it started weaker I entervened. I finished breaking the shell being careful to stay above the air pocket. There was no blood and the yoke was absorbed. I noticed that the membrane was stuck to the keet in a couple of places. I pulled it loose, and put it back in the hatcher. It had half the egg still on it, and then it kicked the other half off. It is , as you can see, doing fine. So do you have ant ideas? I just put 3 more eggs in the hatcher.

I swear this baby is going to be spoiled rotten! My husband has it in his hands or checking constantly! He insisted that go ahead and feed him and guess what he ate and drank! Now there is no slowing it down. It eats and drinks constantly. There are 3 more eggs in the hatcher.

Got another egg tonight but not sure if it came from the inside IB pen or the BSSP pen next to it because the egg was under the dividing wall. I suspecr it was from the bssp group because there is a depression in the dirt. So tonight I decided to check and see if anything was going on and had a dinner of sausage and peafowl eggs. The one I got tonight had the elusive bullseye and the one I cracked open from the Purple pen I got a few days ago was a no-go. Extended forecast for next week is nightime temps still getting down in the '30's here but finally several days of 50's and 60's. It's getting closer and as always I need to quickly cover pens with netting for extra breeding pens. If it would just get and stay warm it would help me decide to move them out.

Well.....I had another one hatch! It's in the big incubator. I've had 2 hatch! I've some die in the shell. It seems to be a learning experience.
