Think if I were incharge of a hatcheries hybrid breeding program I'd make cross breeds look better. I feel like there is so much "sex-link" consideration that has the #1 top priority for breeding since pullets are worth more. And there is no focus on breed improvements, color improvements or exotic looking eggs.
Most of the time is a gamble. Most people are not getting the breed and therefore NOT getting the desired gender either.
So I feel this is an epic fail on hatcheries.
With so many people interested in chickens, more now than ever, breed or health improvement would be a goal.

Chicken sold as barred rock, not barred rock.

Ultimately us the consumers are making the decisions.
Hatcheries put out what sells. The suburban chicken movement fueled all the sex linked hybrids.
It's also pushed the designer hybrids that are nothing more then mixed breeds with cute names and higher price tags.
All we can do as individuals that want to support hatcheries is to support the ones putting out what we like.
If you're not a fan of all the hybrids then buy from those that stick more to traditional breeds.

Yup, that's what we decided was to get heritage birds, but we were sold 'mislabeled' or "accidentally" got the wrong breeds on most occasions.
I mean if you went to buy a car or a dog or anything else and the product was grossly mislabeled...
If your truck turned out to be a prius or your prius turned out to be a golf cart...
Seriously.
Truth in Advertising.

Well usually when someone goes to buy a car or a dog they know what they're looking at. Why are chickens different?
If I went to get a truck and they rolled out a Prius I'd know. Same with chickens. It's fairly simple to pull out your phone and Google a breed's chick pics before walking out with a box full.
It's also pretty easy to know the big chain store that is responsible for these mix ups and not support them.
How long do you think a Prius dealership would stay in business if they continuously tried slipping golf carts off on people?

Had the chain stores check the list from the hatchery... and it was wrong

IDK I wasn't there.
I can tell you I've order 100s of chicks from many of the large hatcheries and didn't have mix ups or mislabeled.
I've also been in the know with two farm stores in my area that do chick days and their boxes come clearly and accurately labeled.
As for the the major chick supplying chain store. I don't trust them or the main hatchery they use to be able to pour piss out of a boot without screwing it up. Therefore I don't shop at/from either.

Yeah we bought chicks for our friends as a gift and they came from a tiny feed supply store and were labeled correctly & everything. We did pay a bit more.
