Sorry that was just an estimate. I think I bought eggs from one of your e-bay auctions before I found BYC. Quail Lady has some great stock.

There is no 18 oz coturnix period.

There is not even 16 oz coturnix, you may get one now and then, but if you average 14oz you have super duper bionic flock.

If you want larger quail go for Butlers or Georgia Giants but they take at least twice as long as coturnix to reach butchering size .

Well I lkie the maturity and egg production of my coturnix, but really would like a bit larger bird than 8-10oz

That's why I came to the quail expert section seeking help. I'd love to add some that were a bit bigger, and as QuailLady said 13oz...that sounds great to me. What's the largest type of Coturnix? Sorry if this is a stupid question, but this is my first year w/them and I'd like more accurate info. Thank you all again. I hope there will be more info added to help me out.

Just a few years ago I was breeding some really LARGE Jumbo Browns and even producing some great Jumbo Golden and Whites. My stock was from a mix match of ebay sellers. Very few people on this forum had Coturnix back when I first started keeping them. It is amazing how they have taken off in just 2-3 years. I would select for length of breast...width of breast....and a bird with an overall great body configuration. Producing LARGE birds doesn't mean breeding your BIGGEST to BIGGEST. I learned that lesson and was reassured of this when my phone buzzed one day and it was Texas A&M universities poultry science profs. We talked for about an hour and I got a wealth of information on how to produce some great birds.
But I didn't have the setup to profitably breed Coturnix all year...but was shipping out a few hundred eggs at the time...a lot of the people on here got their first Coturnix off me. Monarc who no longer posts it seems got her first off me. I then went from producing large birds to RARE colors. I was one of 3-4 breeders to have the Red and Red Tuxedo coloration of Coturnix. I decided to sell those flocks off last year. I have some eggs coming from Robo just to keep my quail itch scratched and give me some birds to raise to sell at the local auction and a few birds for the grill.

Well, get ready for some big birds. Start saving those $ for feed. Cause I don't get one or two here and there.

SamG Good luck in building those birds back up. Fun isn't it.

Do you still raise them or have you moved on completely? That last pic makes my mouth water. Good looking birds. Thanks for the info...I do appreciate all the help I can get.

Sorry, I was talking to Quail Lady there. My birds average out around 12-14 ounces, but my fawns are killing me. They weigh around 10 ounces and I can't get them up there fast enough. I just got them back in August but I would like to add more size to them. Everything else weighs about 13 ounces some bigger some smaller. I just hate little birds. I might have to get some more fawns. There are only 20 of them so it didn't do much.

gotcha, thanks for clearing that up for me.

In the mean time, I seriously need eggs from birds who are a lot bigger than what I have. I'd LOVE, LOVE to work with some of you on here with the 11-14oz birds...I need to rebuild and refurbish my stock with new lines and larger birds. Please PM me or post here...I've got all of you saved in favs. Thanks so much for the help

I just had an idea! What if we made a new co-op with stock from more than one breeder? We could get eggs from a bunch of breeders and then take the largest and go to work. It would also open up the door for comparing color varieties and breeding towards better color too.
