Who takes their pet to be groomed?

I have taken my Cocker Spaniel occassionally over his 12 years. I have never signed anything. I mostly take him to the barn and grab my Oster A-5's and clip him myself, if he is half as bad at the groomers that he is with me I am highly surprised they allowed him back

I am a trained groomer. I would want my clients to sign it. People are crazy these days. I would include the bit about restraining. I think there are crazy groomers out there also and would really want to trust my groomer. All those things you mentioned can happen in grooming a hyper dog and are hard to avoid at times. I would hope if the groomer did something they would help pay for stuff but in doing so leave yourself open to a lawsuit by admitting fault... Ugh...this is why I hated working with people... I think you get the point.

Thank you so much for your input...
I am doing this on my own after being laid off twice in 4 months...UGH! Anyhow I did go to school for this so I am not just any idiot, obviously don't want to hurt any pets...I won't even do a stressed out dog I have to muzzle, but I have seen a person freak out and threaten to sue over a wart! Yes a wart that you couldn't see while the hair was long, but somehow my fellow groomer 'made' appear during grooming?!?!?!?!? One time i gave a dog a little rash (on his boy part) because he moved into the clippers, felt awful, but thankfully that's it...hope it stays that way! Just in case I thought I should do this to protect myself from goofy people...

I sign when I take her to have her nails trimmed, shes a beagle not much grooming. When I was a hair dresser we had people sign something like that for color, bleach or waxing. But if something were to go seriously wrong that release wouldnt keep you from being held responsible. But for nicks and scratches it makes sense.

We don't take any of our animals in to be groomed, but a friend of mine was just telling me about a person who took there dog in to be groomed and the groomer actually cut the dogs ear off and superglued it back on--I don't know the breed of the dog, nor the condition of the coat...
I guess the owner was giving the dog a bath (not sure how long after the grooming), but anyway, they were giving there dog a bath and when it got wet I am assuming the glue stopped holding and the ear fell off in the shower(I believe)....
I never heard this other than from my friend, so don't know all the details, never checked out it's trueness either....

Scary though that it could happen...

I have cocker spaniels that have been groomed every 4-6 weeks for 14 years. In addition I have 2 new Great Pyrenees that had their first grooming and will get groomed every 8-12 weeks (even if they are barn doggies

I have never signed anything for my cockers, but just did take the Pyrs to Petco and signed all their paperwork. I was happy to do it. I would think a responsible pet owner would sign it no problem. I agree that in this lawsuit crazy society, you should protect yourself and you lay the foundation to discontinue services with an aggressive dog if you need to.

Seems professional to me.

By the way, I was super impressed with the Petco staff who pampered my rescue Pyrs. They did a fantastic job and truly seemed to love dogs. I was thrilled with how the Pyrs looked. I have always gone to private groomers, so was hesitant, but clearly Petco trains their staff well.

Good luck!

People should understand their groomer is the first person who will find an exsisting skin condition and a few other vet necessary problems with their animals.
Owners who do not groom their own dogs generally do not know there is a problem brewing untill they take the animal in to the groomer.

The other poster with the foot issue in her dog, wouldnt have known early enough had the incident not happened. granted the groomer went about it all wrong, but that little information got the dog to the vet and checked out early enough where it was easier to treat.

A groomer is your first line of defense when something goes wrong with your animals, they should be praised not be littled.

No I am not a groomer, but I have friends who are, and they are oft yelled at because they found something that needed attention.

I know here in Guelph we have a free legal clinic...maybe there is something like that in your area...or maybe a law school that you can go ask a teacher just to read it over...it sounds great to me...but i am not in any way shape or form a legal wiz...

another tid bit...I know the canadian government has all kinds of programs that will give you a GRANT to start a small business...maybe there is a program running in your state...(free money is always good)

have you thought about what you will do if someone says..."yes fluffy is a little aggressive but the vet gave me these pills for her"...will you work on a medicated animal?...

just brain storming here...but i wish you lived closer...i have a few that need a good grooming and nail trims (black nails...and i dont like doing those myself)

I was trained through Petco, several years ago...you have to be a bather for 6months+, then it is a very intense training, 3 months away at the school in SoCal, then like "on the job training" in other stores with a mentor for several months...I was in college too at the time, ugh! With my mentor I even groomed a Bichon for the Nat'l Expo

Talk about stressful!
Anyhow, I think I may try to have a law student friend of mine look it over, great idea!

And about the ear...WHAT WERE THEY THINKING!?!?!?!? OMG I hope they are out of business for trying to hide something like that! True I'd be seriously freaked out, but you have to tell them so the dog goes to the vet...they might have been able to put it back on! Now he has no ear

Geez I pray nothing like that ever happens to me or any one else!

I don't think I'd do a sedated dog...the only time that is appropriate is if the grooming salon is in a vet hospital...what if they got too sedate and needed to be revived...nope, just plain old reasonable dogs for me
