I have convinced hubby to let me get 6 more chicks!!!!

Now I'm trying to decide where to order them from. Meyer hatchery? myPetChicken? or Murray McMurray?? Which in your opinion is the better one? Best reputation?

I know I like Australorps, RIR and Buff Orpingtons, so I think I'm going to order 2 of each.

Also, is it a good idea to have them vaccinate them before shipment? And if so which vaccine? Is there more than one?

Hello there! Well I'm excited for you! Six more chicks! I can only comment about the Meyer Hatchery. I love them. I'm close enough to drive over and pick up my chicks though. They have all the breeds you mentioned. Meyer has never made a mistake on the sexing for me, and I've ordered plenty of chicks from them. You might want to consider their Golden Buff hybrid. They are awesome layers of a nice big brown egg. Mine layed almost every day.

I think it's a great idea to have them vaccinated. It's inexpensive and just good for their health.

Take care and have a wonderful day,
Sharon

I can't seem to find how much Meyer Hatchery charges for shipping, does anyone know?? I know myPetChicken is charging $36.95 for 6 chicks.

McMurray has a minumum order of 25. I split an order with my bestie this year. She lost all of hers, most to coccili. I didn't lose any to anything other then temp issue and over cuddling. Look around locally first and see if you can find what you are looking for. I found 14 of my chicks using craigslist.

Personally I had GREAT experience with Ideal Poultry. I did have issues with Meyer, and the rep called me after seeing a post on here and made corrections to my account that were acceptable. But I still dont have full trust in them. I had losses from my Meyer order and a couple of my chicks have turned out to be the wrong sex. Ideal on the other hand, all have survived ( I received these the same week I received my Meyer chicks), got to me quicker, cost was decent, and they sent packing peanuts. I do have my replacement chicks coming from Meyer in June, but after that IF I end up going with a hatchery again, which I probubly wont I have enough now to breed, I would go with Ideal and would recomend Ideal to anyone.

ETA: As for vaccines, I dont do vaccines. They wouldnt have had them in the wild so I dont give it.

Oh that is right! I forgot you have to order 25 minimun with McMurray. Ok, scratch them.

Ideal Poultry?? I'll have to check them out.

I was told myPetChicken is very good at sexing, I DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT want any roosters.

No hatchery is perfect at sexing. If you order chicks you run the chance of getting a roo, most hatcheries allow a 10% sexing error on their part.

I have to agree with the above post. I have purchased 2 years in a row, chicks from one of the hatcheries that you listed. Both years, I ended up with a roo out of the group. One may get an exceptional order and have all hens. Just saying it does happen

.

In the past, we have ordered more then needed to meet minimum orders and then sold chicks in lesser numbers to others. Might be an idea for you.

My Pet Chicken is not a hatchery. They are the middleman, and Meyer is one of their hatcheries they use along with others. I have had great results from them 2 years in a row. This year I had a small hatch, and the more chicks you add the cheaper the shipping (ie: 5-10-15 up to 25.) They have great customer service and you should get yours in 1 day in MD.

i wouldn't mail order them from a hatchery because it is stressful on the chicks and the shipping is usually really expensive. Look on craigslist and in the classifieds in the newspaper for chicks nearby so you can pick out the chicks and you don't have to pay for shipping!
