I have 7 mallards in the hatcher drying off... I need some tips on hatching these babies.

Has anyone hatched them in a carton?
I lost #8, because as he was zipping someone rolled him around in the miasma of ick in there from the other ducklings, and it sealed him shut.

My hatcher is a Miss Prissy Bator made out of a Coleman cooler... do I just need a larger hatcher? They make such a mess!!

Edited to add that I really think that crested duck in the photos just above has 'tude, and is the cutest thing!

This little girl hatched out while I was sleeping. Stayed awake for almost 30 hours just to see it, and I missed the hatch...go figure. But what a wonderful sight to wake up to.

awwww... I can't wait to have more duckies hatch!!!!

next week I have a couple eggs go into thehatcher, then another week or two and I have the white call eggs go in (can't wait on those!!)

I just had one hatch totally out and have others are pipping and getting ready to hatch. All were incubated in and are currently hatching out in an cardboard egg carton that has the top removed and the bottoms cut out to provide more air flow.

And as of this past Monday, I've got 40 chicken eggs (Barred Rock, Australorps, White Leghorns and Brown Leghorns) that are also all in egg cartons, going in another incubator.

As soon as these ducklings finish hatching, I've got another 2 dozen duck eggs ready to go in. Someone should have warned me that this was so addictive!!!!!!

I hatch all my chicken and quail in cartons, but for some reason I wasn't comfortable doing it with the ducks. But if you've had good luck with doing it that way, then I will try the next batch that way.

I hatched 5 out of 6 in a carton here is the photo to prove it. The 6th egg never made an attempt and ended up being a bad one. I also hatch all my chickens this way and it has always worked well for me.

Getting excited. Candled last night, (smelling a bad egg) and everyone is doing great. I even saw movement in the Canadian goose egg that was on my island.

I would think if the humidity was too high, that would happen.
I am going to do the next batch that way... hopefully it will keep everyone a little neater and less slimy. :ick

I had a turkey setting back in March and something happened to the eggs... Started to stinking.. I removed her against her will and she only had 2 left of I think around 8..

So I put her outside.. cleaned the nest up and after a short time period opened the hole back up .. And yes, the other 2 eggs were back also..

So if your duck hasn't hatched by day 32.. I'd most definity remove her and clean things out.. I'd listen for movement in eggs before pitching though.. and Maybe gently cracking the big end just to peek what was going on..

Not ducks (although I have 3 more eggs pipping in their egg carton right now), but just went out to check for any last minute duck eggs to put in the incubator and found these little ones in the nest box...

They are Chinchilla rabbits. Yes, I do believe Spring has finally arrived at our place.
