Whose been spurred???

I have several times. I had a silver pheasant that was the nastiest bird I've ever have he would pace along his pen and if you got close he would try to attack through the wire. plus sevaraal of my different chicken roosters.

Yes, definately a dead rooster. Had he been mine and he pulled a stunt like that and continually attacked me, he would have been kill irregardless whether we felt like eating him or not. Same thing with that RIR roo that severed arteries.

Stunts like that can be somewhat excused if you are dealing with birds bred to have that gameness or aggressiveness into them, but most of us deal with egg layers or dual purpose breeds. Breeds that typically have no need for this aggression.

And I'm not talking about those roosters that try to chest bump your legs or even try to spar with you just a little and leave barely noticeable marks. I'm talking about the roosters that actually do damage, dual purpose shouldn't have any need to do damage to humans.

I hope you enjoy eating him. It's not that bad eating him even though you named him. I had a rooster I called Hateful because he would do whatever he could to go fence-fight with the other roosters. He would try to bite me when I opened his cage. Well, one day Hateful tried to attack me while I was holding another bird. That sucker came flying chest-height, I pushed him away. That hateful bird hit the ground, jumped and turned around all in one motion to come back at me. He went on my mental "The List" and was killed the next day. It was the first animal I had ever butchered and eaten, and we enjoyed him too! Here's to Hateful!!

Haven't regretted it a day yet.

Oh no...I've had dog nail scratches like that (accidental playful jumping of course) but no...that rooser would have met a .22 and a ditch. Forget waiting to clean & eat him. That's just nasty. Did it scar? Ugh..I'm so sorry!

No, it didn't scar-luckily. He didn't even break the skin. Now, the one on my leg that he did yesterday, we'll see... it's still orange from the iodine.

He's been minding his Ps and Qs today... even going out of his way to avoid me. Maybe he understood when I stretched him out on one of the tables in the coop with one hand holding his feet and the other on his neck... I growled at him and told him he was dead. He didn't try any of his shenanigans today.
I had a barred cochin bantam that used to do the flutter-bump-dance with my legs... the first time he bumped into me I thought it was funny. The next time he came at me I just happened to be leaning over the dropping pit to get an egg from the nest and kicked my foot out behind me for balance... busted him right in the chops! I felt really bad until he flogged me again... then I busted him in the chops on purpose and he never did it again. He's gone now, though. He was a cutie.

My wife's grandpa tells a story of a rooster he had when he was growing up that was a game bird variety. He said it used to attack everyone, then go search the ditch banks for rooster pheasants to beat up on.

Are you healed yet, TX?

I still have a nasty scratch on my leg, but I now have a big rooster in a bucket of brine... he was 9 pounds when all was said and done. Cleaned up really nice. It's awfully quiet out there. But now we can take the saddles off of the girls and let their feathers grow back.

omg! 9 lb wow what a boy! Bet you feel better..your typing sure SOUNDS like you feel relief

Yes my palm actually quit 'cracking open' every time I opened my palm starting yesterday. Thanks for asking!

Both me and my husband have been spurred. That's why we have no roosters! The girls seem friendlier with no rooster, and we have no interest in breeding. Owning a business take too much of our time now.

I have been spurred once! And that is enough for me!

A woman drove up one day and siad she had a present for me. I had never seen her before, and she handed me a box with a huge RIR rooster in it.
Well, after about 7 weeks of quarantine, I put him out with my hens, cause he was soooo pretty.

I found out why she wanted to get rid of him!

He came at me from behind one day. He got me in the left leg through heavy blue jeans. I had one punture hole above my calf and one on the inside of my knee. I had a bruise all around my leg at knee level and down the back of my leg. The puncture wounds were pretty deep as his spurs were about 4 inches long. He hit me above my boots, like he knew just where to get me.
I happened to have a lead rope with a big bull snap on it hanging near, so I took off after him...limping and calling him not so nice names! I popped him a few times with the snap end of that rope. He has bluffed at coming after me since, but he hasn't actually charged.
I told him if he tried that again, I would get DH's dog and tell her to "catch him" and he would be the next thing caught. That would end his spurring days for good.

He still is behaving well, but I watch him very closely now.
My GD makes sure her dog is with her when she goes into that pen. He won't mess with anyone if one of the dogs is around.

I hope this ends up where it belongs. I'm not sure if I"m typing in the right place. We were given 3 RIR 2 yrs. ago and they were small, medium, and large. None ever gave me any trouble and I knew nothing about birds then. We still have one (the smallest) but I just threw him out of the coop so I could move the 6 ameracunas in. They are about 9 wks. old and I have 3 roos and 3 hens. They're pretty tame and very lovely. I also have 2 guineas in there (mates that had no eggs this year!) and one white chicken I've had the 2 yrs. In my house I have 20 guinea keets almost 1 wk old and have ordered Mille Fleur Banties from MO.
I had no idea that roos would attack humans like that. Very scary! I grew up in the city (New Orleans) and am ever so happy to be a country girl now.
