Why are my chicks cold? Not making sense

We have 4 3wk old chicks & 2 4wk old chicks in a brooder, yesterday & today they cant seem to hang out under the lamp enough!! We were supposed to raise the bulb to bring down the temp, but im worried theyre too cold? Brooder is & has been @ 85 since sunday...also im worried my brooder is getting too small/uncomfortable for them would a 4x4 be big enough till they reach 6/7 weeks?
Right now theyre in a 30 gallon tote

A 30 gallon tote is really too small to allow them to move much away from the light - and is also too small for six chicks at this age -definitely move them to a larger area (4x4 would be good). I suspect once they have room to move away from it you won't perceive them to be behaving as though they are too cold anymore.
