Why are people so weird?

no one wants Quail eggs. Poor Quails...
I've had a small number of quail for about 10 years now, because at my former house there was no way to have chickens so they were my mini chickens. I shared some eggs with my mom and sister. Then we moved to my current house and I finally sneaked in chickens about 3 years ago, and ever since I've had chicken eggs my family doesn't want quail eggs. They are "too much trouble."

I have 4 EEs, 2 Polish, 1 OEGB, and 4 laying quail. I get around 5 chicken eggs and 3 quail eggs a day and usually have more than I can eat. I take them to work at put them at my desk with a little sign that says $5/dozen for large eggs, $3/dozen for bantam eggs, and $5/18 count of quail eggs. I did invest a little money into buying nice clear plastic quail egg holders and vintage style 3x4 dozen egg cartons. As soon as I put chicken eggs out they are gone, but the quail ones sit around for a bit longer. If I still have some there on Friday and don't want to take them home, I'll give them as a bonus to a regular customer.

I also have bee hives and this is my first year with honey, so I set honey bottles out too at $1/ounce (in glass jars with custom wooden labels and honey dippers) and sell out fast. People know my chickens/quail/bees are more like pets and I have higher costs than production plants, but everything is handled humanely, organically, and the birds are spoiled rotten. They have no problem paying more for quality. Sometimes I get the vintage cartons back, sometimes they keep them to use in crafts, but I've made my money back to cover the costs so I don't mind either way. My parents get free eggs (my dad build their chicken house so that's theyr payment, lol) and I may give some to the new neighbors that moved in that seem interested in chickens, but nobody else asks for or receives free eggs.

I always make sure my eggs are clean, I pencil the date they were laid on the "big" end, and they are refrigerated promptly so the customer knows how fresh they are. They pretty much free range although they are fenced in a large grassy area part of the day so they'll lay in the coop and not all over the countryside. I figure, compared to store and organic eggs, mine are probaly worth about $5 a dozen. But I sell to little old ladies on fixed incomes, so I get $1 a dozen. And I get my cartons back. Mostly, what I get out of the deal is the joy of having chickens, tick control, and all the good fresh eggs my family can eat. That's good enough for us.

Well, after reading all the posts I realize I'm quite lucky with the customers I have. I give eggs to my mother in law, but that is all. I've tried to give them to my brother (my best customer), then I tried to get him to give me $0.50 for the carton, he refuses. Always gives me the $3 I ask from everyone else. He's a good sibling :) I get most of my cartons back and a bunch of store cartons (which I don't use ), but am appalled at what some people will bring back thinking it can be reused. I had a guy bring two cartons back with fresh yolk and white all over the inside! Couldn't believe it. Also couldn't figure out how the hell he managed to get egg all over the place!:lau

Makes sense. You steal her goodies, so she stole yours. :D
Just to clean them though! I didnt want her to reinfect herself and I didnt want to disinfect them twice! The funny thing is is that she couldnt get the ziploc bag open. I took it as "fair trade mother...I couldnt open that bag anyway":lau

I always offer eggs to anyone who wants to swing by for a pick up and no one takes me up on it lol... need someone to eat them because our household can't eat them fast enough!

My in laws used to take a dozen every week but they've cut back consumption recently. Thankfully my sister in law is currently in town and really enjoys eggs so she's gone through 3 1/2 dozen so far, and I'm hoping she'll ask for a dozen more before she leaves...

I just ask for cartons back and they're all good about it so no complaints there.

Yes! The joy of having chickens! I only have 3 right now so I'd happily give you $5 for yours! lol I save mine up to feed my grandkids so I know they have one or two meals a week with clean protein. I end up buying most of what the two of us eat.

I think it's wonderful of you to be so kind to the elderly.

I tell people if you want eggs you have to bring a carton I don't have any.
This is a bold faced LIE. I do.
Thing is this is the only way I can ever keep cartons, most the cartons people "scrounge up" are ones they didn't return previously.
So i'm a liar, but i'm a liar with three or four egg cartons. :)
I got a HUGE box of egg cartons when I bought the coop from my neighbour. It's been five years and I still have a 2' tall stack of them. I don't ask for them back when I sell eggs because of this. I want them out of my closet!
