One of my pet Royal Palms was killed by a dog today. I wish that I'd of had a .22! We never had stray dogs in our area until the last year and it seems that a bunch of irresponsible idiots that don't know the meaning of the words, "Leash law" moved in.

My poor turkey. She was so nice.

Ugh. Seems like there are way too many of these posts lately. I don't get why people want dogs who have no concept of what a dog needs for a good life.

PLEASE know your local laws before you do anything. It would be awful for you to wind up in trouble because of their irresponsibility, and it has certainly happened.

These posts most always include advice to SSS: shoot, shovel, shut up.

A .22 is not the best way to dispatch a dog unless you are able to shoot the dog in the head. A dog shot in the body is very capable of making it back home, to the vet and surviving which could lead to you being subjected to some very undesired questioning. If you decide to take a dog out use either a high powered rifle or a shotgun loaded with a turkey or predator hunting load. Either will result in an instant and humane kill.

We have also been having an issue with a nearby dog. I have been to talk to the owner twice and talked to animal control. I told the owner I would take no pleasure in killing his dog but I would if it returned. He has purchased a dog runner after a third visit from my better half, who went over and told him the total count of dead birds and what they owe us. We have over 3 acres and free range our birds, I don`t see why I should have to pen up my birds to keep them safe in my own yard, I would rather kill the incoming dogs as AC has recommended.

Oh no...

I hate hearing that. I lost a few chickens to stray dogs myself. I used to think , well its not the dogs fault , and it isnt.. but trying to find the owners is really unfruitful around here so dogs, cats get shot on sight now. We get tired of people not taking care of their animals.. so we do it for them.

Well...I don't have a .22 or a license, but I can vent! If it came right down to it, I don't know that I would have it in me to kill someone's pet. Now if it turned on me or my children...yes!

I 'm just so tired of irresponsible people.

She was such a nice turkey too and hatched a really nice Spitzhauben for me this spring.

I free range my birds, but I am thinking more and more of going to tractors. They are just so happy out in the open though. I guess I will have to decide, which is better...a longer protected life or a potentially shorter happier one.

I dont know how people can let their dogs roam free..its just beyond my realm of thinking. Some people say that because they are living in the country that everyone does it, so its okay.

I just dont get it. Sorry about your turkey!

When it comes to my turkeys, I will shoot a dog or whatever. I love my turkeys, and no one or thing messes with them. I have more trouble with people stealing them, than predators killing them.
