Eggs, pets, and something pretty down at the pond. I later became interested in breeding them, but haven't gone at it seriously, although I intend to in the spring. I just love the little boogers.

I've always loved ducks, so once I was able to have some again, I did

My cousin called me and said, "I have this duck...and I can't keep him in my apartment anymore. I thought he'd fit in with your chickens. Do you want him?"
LOL! Of course, I can't say no to any animals!!

I was interested in the eggs but also I've read many times about how helpful they are with vegetable gardens for getting rid of pests. I've found this to be true, plus the bedding (straw) has been great for mulch and compost, and the run-off from the pool has provided extra nutritional water for certain vegetables! Chickens never apealed to me for some reason, but when I first consciously thought about getting ducks it was somehow already inevitable! I'm so glad I did!!

At first I got them for meat. I wanted something else besides chickens, guinea, rabbits and quail, lol. But the books just don't say how hard it is to actually kill a duck. We didn't enjoy it. So I gave away my ducks and only just recently got more. My new ducks are for eggs and just because...

We actually got them for my DS's 11th birthday. He always wanted a pet duck. On doing research we realized we really should have at least 2. He wanted day olds, but couldn't really find any around here in August so we ordered from MM. Ordered 10, got 11 and now have 17!

I've always enjoyed ducks ... had a few pet ones as a child. We have a pond now and I'd wanted ducks since we got the pond. Just to enjoy watching them swim.

Secondarily, I've found I LOVE duck eggs for eating and baking. Actually almost prefer them over chicken eggs these days.

Thirdly, they are great for mosquito control, and some other 'buggers.'

When I found out that some breeds of duck lay more eggs than chickens, I ordered some ducklings ASAP. Now that I've had ducks for over a year, I've fallen completely in love with them and their goofy personalities. I'll probably never have chickens again.
