Why do hens crow?

I have two 4 month sex-linked Hens and 5 baby mixed breads about 6 weeks old. The two older ones (Thelma and Louise) are the bosses of the coop, but one of them crows in the morning a couple times. There is a rooster that lives next door (about an acre away) and I'm not sure if she is communicating with him or just being queen of the coop! Either way it cracks my husband and myself up! Chickens are so much fun.

That brat is a gold stare and the rooster is a Americana .
when you bought her did you just throw her in with the others? Chickens will do that if you introduce them to quickly and it'll lead to serious injury or death. Seperation sounds like a good idea a side by side pen where they can interact and get used to each other will solve the problem.

thank you that is great advice I will do that from now on . so I gave her a way to my father in law for Father's Day .we harvested her and find out that she was about to lay her first egg in about 1 or 2 days .

I had 3 chickens that I raised from when they were 3 weeks old. 1 was a lot larger than the 3 he started crowing and I had to give him away as Roosters aren't allowed in residential areas which was sad because he had the best personality of the 3. Since he has been gone, another has started crowing which has me perplexed cause it wasn't as loud as the Roo, and I was told the other 2 are hens. so they are about 11weeks, and im still unsure what sex they are... Still find chickens so interesting

I have 7 chickens an 8 ducks together. Two chickens are Cochins, a hen and a roo, so I thought. Five chickens are silkies, can't tell them apart yet. They are about 11 weeks old. I was postivie that of the cochins, one is a roo and one is a hen. This am when I went out to feed them, the cochin hen was crowing at me, better then the little roo. By looking at tem, I am still quite sure that she's a she. But this doesn't fit any of the things I've read online. She is not alone, not really old enough to be the boss and there is no fighting I hae seen. Help! lol

My lead hen doesn't crow, but she is very vocal with me. I was just cleaning out the coop while one of the hens was on the nest box, and she came in a fussed at me until I left. She didn't want the other hen disturbed, and was protecting her! I know she is a hen, she lays eggs, but her protective behavior is so funny!

Turns out our two "hens" turned out to be roosters! We were disappointed but it all worked out. If your "hen" is crowing...its probably a rooster from our experience. We still have a hard time not calling them "she" or "girls". lol.

I just went to let the animals out and my 2.5 year old barred rock started crowing like a rooster. She did it 3 or 4 times before I shoo'd her along (neighbors). I only have 2 hens and a male duck and the other hen has been sleeping in sick bay due to ascites. This crowing barred rock is the lowest of the flock...but I've noticed her getting a bit out of line since the other has gotten sick.
