Why do people have to be so rude?

It's not so simple as certain people being "rude", as others have explained so very well above.

Having been here for awhile now, I haven't witnessed any increase in rudeness. What I have noticed over the past couple of years is a large influx of a different kind of poster.
It used to be that BYC was mostly farmers, breeders and those who wish to be more self sufficient, many of which tend to be more stoic, pragmatic and to the point types.
The newer BYC posters are primarily pet chicken folks who in general tend to be rather idealistic, sensitive and more easily offended types.

Just because someone gets their feelings hurt doesn't mean something has to be done about it. I've had my feelings hurt here and no doubt have hurt a few other people's feelings. That, IMO, is life. 🤷‍♀️

I think BYC does a pretty darn good job at riding the line between allowing people freedom of expression and keeping the overall peace. It's waaaaay more tame and pleasant here than most other places I visit online.
I think I am a pet chicken type but not particularly sensitive or easily offended, but I do agree that BYC does a very good job at managing the line. Quite remarkable actually.
Thank you BYC Mods!

I love BYC and seldom encounter rude people here. It does happen and some may think I have been rude a time or two. I hope not, but we all think differently and some have very strong opinions. I will usually, just admit when I am wrong or somebody else gives a better suggestion or idea. If they tell me I am wrong in a disrespectful way, I might react too harshly depending on my general stress level and how much coffee I have had that day. I hope not to offend anyone and just offer suggestions , helpful observations or my opinions for what they are worth , take it or leave it! We should all give each other some slack and try and focus on mutual interest of our love of keeping poultry, gardening and etc.. I have given my ideas and been shown a better way several times by another member! We can all learn no matter how long we have kept chickens or other poultry species. My 49 years of keeping chickens on my own as an adult has taught me one thing for sure, I learn something new every year! It is ok to disagree and that is not rude! Just be respectful and allow for the other persons difference of opinion, right or wrong. The members will sort out the information and rank it as they see it! God bless you all and thanks for being here.

Geena:

I understand the demographic change for BYC over the years, but, I am not talking about sensitivity. I am talking about professionalism and respect. Telling someone (especially the newbie's), that they will kill their chickens if they give them too much watermelon or cucumbers not only sounds ridiculous, but it is not founded in any science.

I agree with you. The two staff members on the greeters forum @N F C, and @TwoCrows, are extremely helpful, knowledgeable and fair.

I agree with you in that. There is too much ‘feed philosophy as religion’ and it can be insensitive along the lines of ‘your chicken will die and you only have yourself to blame because you let it eat an apple core’.
I particularly appreciate the people who can back up there assertions with the underlying science and data. I feel we are getting more of that in the feed discussions recently.

I give my chickens greens most days for the past 49 years with no problems in moderation and keeping it to small amounts per bird given in the afternoon. Some people may be voicing opposition to snacks because some may make your birds store too much body fat internally as chickens do and reduce laying and sometimes some other problems have been reported. This is usually people who feed "too much high protein and high fat snacks" or table scraps with a lot of fat. I learned this the hard way myself about 40 years ago. Well fed chickens on a good balanced diet lay better than chickens not fed a balanced and healthful diet, just like us people who do better on a well balanced healthy diet. I occasionally feed them small amounts of packaged dried grubs or fly larvae that are high in protein and fat, but in moderation in the afternoon. That way they have all fed most of the day on their balanced ration and no problems , every since I recognized the issue as a young guy many decades ago. Best wishes for you and your flock and don't worry about snacks in moderation ,especially greens from the yard or garden. I tried to avoid even mentioning this on this thread , but see it is the prime issue that concerns you. If you don't depend on eggs, internally fat chickens may not be a problem at all for you. Respect for you from me for your concerns, I have over done the snacks before but moderation is the key as it is in most things.

I haven't ever seen anyone say anything quite that dramatic. But I have seen plenty of misinformation posted here by well meaning people who perhaps aren't quite as knowledgeable as they seemingly believe themselves to be.

It goes with the territory and it's best to just post your hopefully more factual information and then let the chips fall where they may, instead of getting into a pissing match about the rights and wrongs of things. Quite often, especially regarding feed, the best answer is somewhere in the middle anyway.

You can't expect everyone to be professional and respectful, or anything else really, this is a public forum full of mostly lay people, not experts in the work place.;)

Well said and understood, Geena.
