Why do people have to be so rude?

I get around the internet a fair bit and I must say BYC is the most polite forum I've ever been on!

Whilst the majority are in the US, there are people here from all over the world, with many different languages, beliefs, and ways of life.

What unites us all is our love of keeping poultry, waterfowl, etc. Whether we are rural with acres of land, or suburban with rooster hating neighbours, whether we keep chickens for food, eggs or pets, I reckon we all want to be better chicken keepers and to share our knowledge and learning with others.

I'm mostly from London, and we love straightforward honesty. It's called "calling a spade a spade". Delivered bluntly but usually with kind intentions behind it. Is that rude? It's mostly individual perception.

I agree with you Chicalina! this is a very polite website , maybe the best I have been on ,as well! Sometimes a few bruised egos or a bit too much aggressiveness can cause a bit of tension, but all in all, most people are friendly and reasonably courteous. I have been accused of bluntness and lack of sensitivity before but who's perfect?(not here I don't think!) Anyway, I really like BYC and even though I may disappear for a few weeks at a time, I am always finding myself wanting to come back and see what's up! I have met friendly people here from California to Bangladesh and all between. Life is similar with gardeners and chicken folks all over the world in so many ways.

Thanks for those nice comments!!!

We're SUPER fortunate to have the world's BEST moderators! We're getting-close to TWO decades of hard-work setting and maintaining a really special demeanor/tone with our incredible BYC community!

We try VERY hard to allow the community to moderate itself and ask our members to be mindful of what they say AND how they react (see more info here)... and for the most part, considering how crazy the public internet can be, I think BYC is a respite... a safe-place compared to much of what is out there.

So, a HUGE THANK YOU to all our members that:

1) Are very mindful about what they say and how they say it
2) Are patient and slow-to-react when they see something they don't like

In the year and a bit I have been here, only once was someone actually rude, (partly my fault, I was pretty new at the time and didn't understand somethings) and the mods tidied it up very quickly.
Other then that, all I see is different people, some with very different views on things. Many I agree with, some I don't, but that doesn't mean they are wrong, just wrong for my situation.
I think you need to be able to read everything, and be open to trying new things, but don't feel forced to do anything just because someone said so.
And compered to the fb BYC page, here its soo polite and peaceful!

I agree they don't need to be rude about it, but it is necessary to correct them sometimes. Like if someone starts a thread and has a question or emergency, someone else could be giving them completely wrong information.

I have been in this group for over 7 years and I have seen many posts. I am so surprised that people who have so much in common can be so rude to each other. We all, every one of us, have our own experiences and opinions. The OP asked a question and needs our help, and we all do it in our own way. It is no help at all for the responders to argue amongst themselves because they don't agree on what another responder said. I think we should all keep that in mind when we join in. We all have an individual level of experience but no one, no one, has the right to talk down to another participant. Thank you for your time in reading this. There is no need to clarify or respond. I am not expecting that. Let's all agree to disagree without harsh words. Let's start a new trend.........

I have been on the BYC forums for over 3 years. This is by far the best behaved forum I have ever been involved with on the internet. I think a large part of that credit goes to the excellent moderators. They are fair and allow different points of view, but step in and enforce the forums guidelines when necessary.

IIRC, over these years, I have reported only about three "members" that I suspected were nothing more than Trolls, trying to cause trouble. Two of those "members" were taken off the forum, but there was one that was not. Turns out, that third person never showed up again. I suspect they moved on somewhere else to cause a commotion.

I once reported the content of a thread that had "devolved" into unkind words of a particular ethnic/religious group. The moderators agreed that the thread was not in keeping with the forums rules and shut that thread down. Another great response by the moderators in keeping this BYC forum well behaved.

I had a thread that I started shut down by the moderators because of a number of comments and responses that flared up. I don't know exactly what the moderators saw that disturbed them, but I did not like the direction that the thread was having either. So, I never took the closing of that thread personally and just continued on with other topics of concern to me.

I am sure people come and go on forums like these all the time. If you have concerns about behavior on the forum, then report it to the moderators and let them look deeper into the concern. Also, if I don't like the tone of a thread, I just don't follow it anymore. I self-moderate which discussions I want to be involved in all the time. There are more than enough other interesting threads to follow.

I have reported a couple of posts. One was a clear troll and one was just very inappropriate. I could no believe how fast the mods acted. Both were taken down in about 30mins. I don’t think the target of the inappropriate post ever even knew there had been a post.
I think we owe them a lot in maintaining the relatively civilized nature of the BYC community.

That's great. I think all us members need to be proactive and report misconduct if/when we see it. Let's keep these forums open for good discussions. Trolls have no intent on making positive contributions. They just want to cause problems. If they don't get shut down fast, good people leave the community forum and go elsewhere. I've seen that happen to a number of internet forums that were not moderated. BYC forums do it better.

I've been on this forum for 1½ years, I absolutely love it. I am definitely not super active in the public forums but here's my perspective. When I first joined, I seen lots of posts I took as rude and untasteful, but as I grew with the community I've learned a few things:
1. You can't be over sensitive.
2. Tone can come across wrong in text.
3. If you think it's rude, no need to ag it on, just let it go.
4. The staff does a great job of correcting it

Some people give, quick, to the point responses with no hi, hello, sorry to hear, stuff and it can seem rude but it's not meant that way, they are helping in a easy quick way.
Just my perspective
