Why do people think I'm crazy???

I've always followed the beat of my own drum, and don't care what anyone else thinks

My dad used to say I was a free spirit. Whatever I am, I'm happy. That's all that matters.

I've learned to just smile and nod at people like that over the years. They just don't get it, and they probably never will...
Take pride in what you do and know, and you'll always be better off knowing it... My grandmother used to say that.

It is funny how they ridicule you for having farm animals but they are the first to stick out their greedy little hands for fresh hamburger or nice farm fresh eggs from YOU!!!! and they want it for nothing too!

More people than not look at me like I'm nuts when I tell them we have chickens. What the heck is wrong with eating responsibly... do they not realize or care about the conditions layers are kept in commercially or even meat birds for that matter?

Most people indeed do not care about such things.

You can only get through to them when you offer them something that solves a recognized pain or problem, in other words when it benefits them directly. When they can still buy eggs for $1.75 per dozen, regardless of their source, they dont perceive a problem. WE don't always like it, but there it is.

You sound as if you are in what I call the "honeymoon" phase of chicken keeping. You are enthusiastic and passionate about it. But, hammering them with their faults and ignorance which only you can see tends to push them away... and leaves you looking like a food-elitist, no m atter how well-intended you are.

Most people tend to steer wide of pious evangelists, regardless of what they are offering.

You might want to try asking what it is about fresh eggs and chickens they would like to know. Offer them some free eggs to try, or offer to give them some chickens of their own from your next hatch. Be a teacher and a giver, instead of pointing the accusing finger.

I always get the "you're nuts" look when I first tell people.

But after the initial shock I find it's a great time to educate them. They often start having more and more questions not only about chickens but where our food comes from in general.

Look at it as a learning/teaching opportunity.

I even know a couple of people that actually got chickens themselves as a result of our discussions.

Same here. I've become something of a "Johnny Chickenseed" in my locale, even guesting on a national radio show for my efforts.

I know! They think we're crazy??!! (OK maybe a little...

) yet they don't even know where most of the food they buy comes from! I would rather eat our eggs, which are farm fresh and come from happy hens, rather than the eggs from the store that come from tortured, unhappy hens that are made to lay eggs until they drop dead at factory farms...

I never get those odd looks here, I guess it all depends on where you live. Most people around my area are farmers and ranchers, and if someone is not, it is very probable their parents and relitives are.
Our local grocery store even processes it own meat, and buys local produce....I sure love my little peace of paradise!

Davaroo - great sentiments.

I homeschool & have been volunteering DD as a guest speaker for local schools. Kids usually don't get the chance to meet chickens. So my motto is "change one mind at a time".
