Why do people throw out lit cigarettes?

We have a wide entrance to our property, to allow large trucks to make it in without taking out the fence and gates. Apparently this is the ideal place to stop and dump out their ash tray. So my question is, if they can refrain from tossing them out of the window, why can't they refrain from dumping them in my driveway? Their drive way is inconvenient? They have to pull over and stop in ours. They pull into their drive way at least once a day. If I knew where they lived I would take them back to them.

I had one Grandfather born on Christmas day, and one born on New years eve. My great grand mothers celebrated both days in big ways!
I hope it is easy and peaceful. Blessings to you all.

There's one particular exit ramp here too that collects literally thousands of butts. I want to scream every time I'm behind someone in a car and see them flick a butt out the window. Good for those cops who are catching and calling them on it. Personally, I think the person should have to eat the cigarette butt... That would "cure" them quicker than anything...

I agree, lit or unlit. It is trash, just like anything else. look down at any traffic light, it is disgusting.

Lots of house fires in our area lately. The latest one was a barn that burned down to the ground after a guy had been in there using a grinder. All it takes is one tiny spark...

Trash is Trash, be it fag butts, MickyD wrappers or beer cans. And in most states, if not all, it is illegal to litter. Maybe more of us should adopt a piece of road or hwy, and help keep the earth a little cleaner!

And before everyone comes back and tells me it is not their job to pick up other peoples trash, I am suggesting this not to enable the irresponsible. But to give us peace of mind in knowing that we are contributing to our planet even if it is a small gesture.

Their will always be idiots out there, we can't change that....we can only change what we do about it.

I wholeheartedly agree! It is a filthy habit. If a smoker feels they don't want the dirty thing in their car, what makes them think I want it in my yard?

One time, my brother was on his motorcycle on the expressway and someone tossed a lit butt out their car window. It flew right into the top of his boot and started his sock/pants on fire while he was driving! Luckily he was able to pull over and get his boot off and put it out. He could have been killed or killed someone else. People just don't think.

When I lived in the city I did this regularly without a thought. when I moved to the country I did it, until one day i drove by a pasture that had been burned -- come to find out if was probably started by a cigarette being thrown out. I drive by that pasture everyday and thought that could of been mine. so now, I use my coke can in my car as an ashtray, since my care is not equipped with one.

All i can think about is that pasture sometimes has hay, sometimes has momma cows calving -- I just can't stand the thought of burning up feed for the cows or the cows themselves.....

I did this when I lived in Charleston SC. Doc told me to walk more, so I started walking to and from work, about 1.5 miles each way. I got disgusted at the amount of trash I saw during the walk, so I got one of those long-handled grabbers and started carrying it and a trash bag. You would be amazed at what people throw out onto God's green earth. Eventually I was able to say that I couldn't think of anything I hadn't picked up off the side of the road... there was no article of clothing that I had not found. And eventually I ended up carrying two bags, so I could put recyclables (metal and glass) in one, and regular trash in the other. Cigarette butts are the worst because there are just so many of them. There was one corner with a traffic light where people would apparently just dump their ashtrays while waiting for the light to change. About once a week I'd just take a whisk broom and dustpan to that one and sweep 'em up.

Not only cigarettes-trash in general. Reason: laziness and lack of respect for the world that we live in. Just imagine what the interior of their homes looks like.
