Why do people throw out lit cigarettes?

I have WHAT in my yard? :

Most cigarette butts are toxic to birds and other wildlife. They'll eat 'em but it will kill them.

Sorry, don't believe that. Birds don't usually eat them, they use them for nesting. By then most that was in it has been washed away by rain. Have not seen any signs that it hurts them. An they break down before they can be used in a second nesting season.

Cigarette butts are often found in the stomachs of young birds. Many butts are made of paper and plastic and do not decompose as most people think they do. Butts are usually some version of filter and the filter traps the toxins that aren't good for people such as arsenic and cadmium. Both of these leech into the systems of birds that ingest them. Often the butts swell in the stomach of the bird and prevent them from eating more food. Birds that show signs of poisoning from butts show developmental issues and problems flying in a coordinated manner.

Butts that remain in the area of water leech those same poisons into the water often killing off lower life forms and again, being eaten by marine life.

Anyone who has ever done a beach clean up or a river clean up or a bird rescue knows and has seen that cigarette butts are one of the largest single items collected. I have seen young birds die in rescues with stomachs full of plastic including butts.

Do a little research - just a touch.

Well I have read the same info, so I believe it, which is why I am offended when cigarette butts are flicked in my yard. All of my animals free range and I DO NOT want any of my animals picking up a cigarette butt and eating it.

For the 22 years I smoked, I hand rolled my cigg's. The little bit if rice paper, and the bit of resinous tobacco was all that remained and that I would disassemble and spread to leave no obvious evidence. The best thing about hand rolling, is that cigarettes usually go out as soon as you stop puffing on them. Unless you are smoking old, dried out tobacco from the bottom of the pouch. I accidentally caught the backseat of a guy's pickup on fire doing that once. I'm proud to say I've been nicotine free 16 months now, I'm having a hard time at this point imagining what it was like to constantly need to light up. I used to think I actually enjoyed smoking. I didn't, I had only brainwashed myself to think I did. Besides, I couldn't afford to support the Government anymore. (I've saved $3,353.00)

Please, if you must smoke, mind your butts.
