Why do people throw out lit cigarettes?

Back in San Diego, tossed butts are a huge problem. It's not unusual to get yearly wildfires because of tossed cigarettes. Some people don't realize that one senseless act can cause millions of dollars in damage and lives. I don't know if it's still done, but years ago, you could report a vehicle that a butt was tossed out of and if found, the person would get a huge fine.

Our property has frontage on a four lane highway. Picking
up thrown out trash is a constant thing. We do keep it mowed
and clean.

*Actually keep it mowed, clean and cleared all the time. It's used
as a landing spot by Life-Flight when needed.

People shouldn't litter. And cigarettes are litter. But all I can do is
pick up my yard.

We have the Louisiana cigarette hot line that I have programmed in my phone (That I use weekly.) for those nice people who love to throw cigarette butts out of their cars. Once they are reported, they get a warning in the mail, along with an ashtray to put their butts in. More reports of the same car, warrants tickets and fines.

I had a neighbor come over to my house 2 weeks ago to talk to me about something and he was smoking a cigarette. I had to move back away from him because I can't stand the smell of cigarette smoke and he smelled HORRIBLE.

Well, lo and behold, when he was done with his cigarette, he threw it on my concrete driveway and stomped it out with his feet and LEFT IT ON THE DRIVEWAY.

Then he proceeded to take out another cigarette, lit it and started smoking it. Guess what? After he was done with the cigarette, he flicked the lit butt in my yard. I was fuming at this time. By this time, I had to let him know how I felt. Do they not know what they are doing? Maybe this is a learned behavior that should be unlearned.

I wonder why people throw anything and everything out of their cars? I can't understand why they can't wait until they get home to throw away fast food wrappers, cans and bottles. I would guess for the same reason they toss cigarettes--they're slobs.

Well i am a smoker and i have to say that some of us are responsible and try to not litter the roads with them. I know the city i work in if they catch you throwing one out it is a $50 fine for littering - and i agree with it.

I think they do not think.
It is something in their space that they do not want. They toss it out the window and *bing* instant gratification, problem solved, now on to light another.

I bet if someone set their pasture on fire, or lit their sock and boot on fire or their groceries in the back of their truck, or tossed trash in their front yard... they would be ticked and wonder, "why is everyone out to get ME?" Because people like that are very myopic. They only see themselves in the grand picture. It is there for them. just them.

I grew up with one of them. They can not figure it out. The universe was indeed spinning around them and out to get them at the same time. I suppose we should just feel sorry for them as we clean up their messes.... or not.

Throwing a lit butt out the window is not smart.
Smoking is not smart.
See a pattern there somewhere???

I'll bet they are texting, putting on eyeliner, eating McD's, and beating their 14 kids at the same time.

I'm not saying,,,I just saying....

I'm thinking 10 butts or 100 butts for every PENNY. I think you're lenient.
Maybe it's a good thing I'm not a judge...

I walk our road regularly cleaning up in front of my house & several neighbors. I think I'm the only one that does, though most neighbors do pick up stuff that blows way up into their yard. Last time I did this, I picked up a full big black trash bag full in less than a half hour. Admittedly, this was more than usual because I was able to pick up stuff that had blown back into trees/vegetation that I couldn't get to when grass was long & bushes/trees were leafed out. I need to go out and do this again since the snakes are all frozen right now. (Yes, I know, they aren't literally FROZEN.)

I do not think it is real smart to generalize all smokers into whatever catagory you are try to fit them into.
Everyone is an individual and makes their own choices, some are good, some not so good. What you are trying to do....I see as not so good!
