Why do you have Chickens??

We moved from the big city to "out in the country" almost 7 years ago. There are quite a few people out here who have chickens, and I had been thinking for years that it would be fun to have chickens running around. I never even mentioned this to my husband because surely he would think I lost my mind.

Well, one day it just kinda came up (I think someone else mentioned it) and turns out he wanted chickens too! His mom had chickens when she was younger and he always thought that was cool. So next thing ya know, I started chicken research on the internet and found BYC. Now I have 13 happy chickens, and a very happy family

I will be a new chicken owner, they come today or tomorrow YAY!! It all started when I bought my goat the lady had chickens and we started talking about the prices of food up here and how much she enjoys having her chickens/fresh eggs. Her family dont eat as many eggs as mine do but got me thinking..... My husband rasied them with his mother and grandmother all his childhood life. So a call to his grandma to pick her brain and my mind was made up!I have always wanted to be more self-sufficent I grow a nice big garden every summer and really enjoy the feeling at the end of the season when I see all the rewards for all my hard work. PLus I just love animals!!!!! Price wise yes it will save us a little money I think in the long run but that wasn't the main reason. It is soo exspincive to buy organic in the stores it will be nice exsclude a couple of items off my grocery list. PLus I plan on having enouph egg layers to give my sister and her family some fresh eggs, they are not as fortunate as we are and anyway I can help them I will.

totally understandly. that's also why we are pushing so hard on our garden and other things we are doing around the house. If we could just get the dang thing paid off (<SIGH> it'll be a while on that one) we would be better off.

I've really enjoyed reading everyone's postings. Wish more would have replied.

I would love to have other useful animals - cow for milk, sheep for wool - but that is just fantasy at this point. But I can have chickens where I live. I got them for the eggs, but have learned to enjoy them for their personalities, and funny antics. I was going to get them 2 years ago, but that turned out to be my DH's "cancer year". When we finally got through that I thought maybe it was time for my nervous breakdown

, but decided to get some therapy chickens instead. And they have done that job very well

I like to know where my food comes from and to know that it had a good existance.
Eggs and meat are my reasons.

One day my mom was on craigslist, they had an ad for a free black silkie chicken. She called me over and said "do want a chicken?" We got there, there were 3, and one was a rooster, but they weren't sure which. *They gave us all 3 of them we promised to give them the hens back, and they all turned out to be roosters!* (*I think that's how it happened. It's been a long time but somehow we ended up w/ all 3*). We built them a coup and have had chickens ever since. I've had my flock wiped out twice by predators, hoping that it's Ft Knox now.
I think the main goal of my chickens is baby chicks and eggs, I've had chickens for 2 years, no eggs. My hens were Almost laying when winter hit, they weren't winter layers, they made it through most of the winter, and just missed spring by a few weeks.
