I grew up with red island and sex links that were my Dad’s. His grandparents had farms so he wanted us to experience the fun of watching chicks grow and collect eggs. He just bought pullets from the feed store. I got my first rooster when I was in older elementary school I saw my first silkie rooster at my sister’s school’s 4h club and begged my dad for it. He got it and a lovely Easter Egger pair. Sadly one night they were all slaughtered so we didn’t get anymore till I was graduating high school. Went to buy some horse feed and there was an older trio,(one rooster and two hens,) for sale and we bought them and a cute little coop for them. Eventually both hens died from likely old age and bought some red islands and sex links pullets for our sweet rooster. The following year we saw Buff Orpingtons, White Leghorns, Easter egger pullets for sale. My dad was excited to get more blue egg layers and I thought the Orpingtons were adorable. I still have one of the Easter Eggers and buff Orpington both you can see their old age and still friendly. Now I have silkies for their cuteness, some Easter eggers for my dad, turkens because their so ugly they’re adorable(also super friendly,) three tractor supply breed hens(for laying, but weirdly friendly to whom they like,) ducks and ducklings of random breeds,( my favorite is the runners,) and the rest are various breeds of chickens from cross breeding and feeling bad for the chicks left over when I get feed.
have even put feed out and stuff. They appreciate the help they really aren't abusing the chicks they just get so busy and some like the Cornish crosses will empty a food dish in no time and at this point are still cute and cuddly so they actually get complaints from people who see the poor chicks with no food. Suilly silly. I hope they are asked if they did anything to help.
