Why doesn't my barred rock have yellow legs.

Thank you for asking him! I think I will enter her in a production class, along with the other 4 hens! The only reason I'm not entering the others in open class is because they are missing one standard each.

My white leghorn has an upright comb, DQ
My gold comet lost an eye, DQ (not sure if she's enterable anyway)
My buff orpington has discolored feathers, DQ
My other chickens aren't even pure breeds, DQ

Thanks for your help everyone!

My white leghorn has an upright comb, DQ

A upright comb on a Leghorn isn't a DQ.

Really? I thought the standard was a folded comb!

There are only 2 major DQ's with a Leghorn
1 - More than one half of a cockerel or pullets earlobes being Red
2 - Cocks and Hens being 20% over or under standard weight. (standard weight cocks 6 lbs and hens 4 1/2 lbs)

Now on Male Leghorns they should have a medium comb that is upright and straight.
Hens should have a comb that the first point is erect then the remainder of the comb flopped to one side but it isn't a DQ if it don't it is a fault.

Here she is, beautiful, her upright comb is what made me think she was a rooster in early years.

I would need a better picture but I would say young rooster BUT I don't think it is a Leghorn.
Try Minorca, Leghorns have Yellow legs where as Minorca's have White.

What are you feeding them? Brand name?
It could be a Leghorn but with faded legs just like your Barred Rock.

Hi Chris,

Is there a feed that you would recommend for optimum health for chickens? Mine aren't SQ, and that isn't my aim, I also doubt that their leg color is nutritional, or longevity of laying because they just started in May. I would really appreciate knowing a good feed, though if there is one readily available. Thanks if you have suggestions.

I would recommend a feed that has both Animal and Plant Protein, corn and also has a protein amount of 18 to 20 percent.
This is the Ingredients list of my feed -
INGREDIENTS:
Ground Corn, Soybean Meal, Porcine Meat Meal, Wheat Middlings, Corn
Gluten Meal, Alfalfa Meal, Animal Fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols, citric acid and
rosemary extract), L-Lysine, DL-Methionine, Calcium Carbonate, Salt, Calcium Phosphate,
Manganous Oxide Ferrous Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Ethylenediamine
Dihydriodide, Sodium Selenite, Vitamin A Acetate, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Vitamin E
Supplement, Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex (source of Vitamin K Activity), Riboflavin
Supplement, d-Calcium Pantothenate, Niacin Supplement, Vitamin B-12 Supplement,
Choline Chloride, Folic Acid, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Thiamine Mononitrate, d-Biotin.

I also offer a pigeon grain mix at the rate of 10% of there diet. (90 lbs layer feed + 10 lbs pigeon grain mix)

That feed mixture looks great. Forgive my ignorance, do you make this up for yourself, or is it available to the general public? Please email me incase it is verboten to list the actual brand name or the source if it can be obtained on the internet, or if I am being rude with khatar's thread. ( khatar, sorry if this isn't the direction you were interested in. )

Where I live, there isn't a lot of availability, and I have been looking for something better than the feeds that I have bought, with the exception of the 'grower' feed that was higher in protein 18% as the first bag I bought when just getting the chickens in April. Around here, seems like I can only get 16% protein. I Keep going to different feed stores and not finding options. I think people are in 'hard times' now with the drought in TX, and want whatever is the cheapest.

Is the pigeon mix for nutritional boost? I will be off googling pigeon food now. THANKS much for the ingredient listing, I will have a good basis of comparison when feed shopping.
