Why don't people listen... Rant

And then you have people like one of my neighbors... she refuses to take advice from anybody because her grandmother's neighbor's sister's hairdresser's boyfriend once had a chicken farm, therefore she's the reigning chicken expert :barnie

This lady had chickens for like five minutes and was trying to tell me I've been feeding my chickens the wrong food for the past 40 years :duc:smack

I do a lot of tongue biting here. I have a couple "new to chickens" neighbors. No run cover and hawks sitting on the power poles just waiting for breakfast every day. I have other neighbors that find chicken remains in their yards and come to have me "pick up the dead bird" because they are SURE it is mine......until I show them my chicken runs and how it is definitely NOT mine.

 Cannot force people to listen.

My thought is far to much is automated....done for ya stuff so thinking, problem solving, hands ON is going by the wayside.

∆∆ this is so very true ∆∆

I was blessed in that even though I got chickens before BYC existed and I didn't have a computer anyway I had great people at the feed mill that took the time to help me learn.

 I didn't count...did I go over 160 characters?
How dare! More than 300 characters! That would be two text-messages! :gig:hugs

Fortunately, she is now listening, researching, and making the needed changes.

Thing that gets me, in this day and age where info is easy and accessable, why don't people research and educate themselves before jumping in feet first?

OMG, seriously! Some folks seem to have forgotten that not that many years ago, all this info was very hard to get ahold of, if I had had BYC for instance, back when I was a kid, I'd have learned how to read and write a whole lot sooner and would have averted disaster with dozens of chickens and our neighborhood fox. I think people have grown complacent with respect to what used to be hard earned good advice. glad to hear the learning curves has compelled them to change their tune!

Wisdom is, when after 40 years of having chickens you are still willing to listen to other's opinions. And laughing about it, secretly! :gig
I am an IT consultant, working 20 years for the same company and still: I learn something new every day. And i enjoy it!

I can only hope she listened with both ears. She "ordered" a new coop. 2 month build period. Should be here next week. I told her it would be cheaper to get a shed and modify it. Can only hope the new one is of proper size, ventilation, roosts proper height, ECT.
A local contractor is going to put up a dog proof fence with a hot wire to deter digging.
It's not going to stop flying predators, but will deter the pups.

When speaking to this particular lady I have to bite my tongue so much it's a wonder I can still talk! She informed me that in the winter you're only supposed to feed your chickens cracked corn... and that the reason I don't get as many eggs has nothing to do with daylight, but it's because I have failed to add pepper flakes to their water.
And in fact, if your flock is healthy, they don't molt at ALL. Ever. Molting is a sign of poor nutrition.....:th
Yeah this gal's a real hoot..:he

time for a lesson in avian biology, in particular as pertains to chickens. Get her a late Christmas present...a book.

I agree with you entirely on those »agreements«. Those have been designed to discourage you from reading them, so you will happily sign away your soul.
Also agree for those »manuals« that come with CCC (Chinese Cheap Crap) products, sometimes a random mixture of English (?) words.
But i'm talking about the instruction documents that i tailor for my customers.
I am convinced that I have mastered the English language well enough to be able to write understandable instructions. I do my best to not to write my documents boring as chewing on cardboard, even include some jokes, like »After you click on the Install button you are free to have your lunch break, because this step will take at least an hour.«
And yet still people don't read them thoroughly. Make costly mistakes and blame the documentation. More and more i observe that humons are no longer able to understand a sentence, consisting of a major and minor clause and if a sentence covers more than two lines it is "game over". Subject, predicate object, that works. "Press red button." "Seek cover." "Survive end of world." That's just what the younger generation seems to be able to understand. Loved to read Douglas Adams, but most people nowadays are incapable of understanding sentences like "The ships hovered in the sky in the very same way as bricks don't."

You know I always want to jump in to defend us young folks, then I realize I'm not really so young anymore. I will say that as a former teacher, there are good and bad apples in every group. I've had students of every age who are eager to learn, conscientious, and responsible.
The stragglers sometimes grow into their better qualities, sometimes they don't. Some people have a frustrating inability to listen to or care about others, and this is more frustrating when they are teens/young adults who think they know everything. It's not like there aren't older adults like that too. I know a lot more about some things, for example, computers, than my mother does. Does she believe me when I warn her about scams? Nope.
The world is different now than it used to be, but I have a hard time believing people are all that different.
