Hey there! So we have a Pekin drake and 3 Pekin females...
First question... and I’m going to be as delicate as possible... but he never seem to be successful when mating. For some reason, he doesn’t want to mate in the pool, but on the ground, making it easy to see. And... he just never accomplishes much (trying to choose my words here!!!) We also have a Cayuga male and 3 ladies, and he mates in the pool. Let’s put it this way, when we set eggs to be incubated, the Cayuga eggs seem to be fertilized, the Pekin eggs not.

Second question, the Pekin drake ONLY mates with one girl. Exclusive is an understatement with him! The girl is missing almost all of the feathers in the back of her neck, and she is becomin’ very skittish. He has 2 others that I have never once seen him try to mate with, while I see him after the same girl a couple times an hour. I’ve never seen anything like it. Why is he doing that? What can be done to stop it? We’ve heard using a sock on her neck will help. Opinions? And what about the over-mating in general?!?! Sorry for the long thread!!! Have a blessed day friends.

Your drake is young and inexperienced. Most of them are in their first year.

As for favoring one over others, that is how some drakes are. The only way to stop it is to separate them. Keeping her in a fenced off area where she can see her friends but gets some peace, might work. While she is healing, he might develop another favorite

Yay, our duck isn’t “broken!” 😊😊
So can we assume this gets better over time, Lord’s Willing?

And okay!! We can certainly try that. She needs a break. And we would sure love if he would take a fancy to his other 2 girls!
Thank you for the information!!! Have a blessed day! 😊

My son has a pekin drake that is 1 year old this month. He tries in and out of the wading pool and two of the three females actively encourage him, but I haven't seen his successfully penetrate any of the females. So no, your drake isn't broken.

Good!!! Poor boys, bless their hearts! On a happier note, Ours and your son’s Pekins must have similar birthdays! 🎊🎊

Oh, good to know. I've seen my little runner drake try and try and not mate successfully several times. I think he gets it now and then, but he sure isn't very quick.

I would want to separate your pekin girl with a friend though - she shouldn't feel lonely!

There's not much you can do about the over mating if he has a clear favorite. She definitely needs to be separated so she can recover and hopefully he will turn his attention to the two other girls, but keep a close eye in case he picks only one of them to mate with.

For the first question, were you asking how to get your pekin to mate successfully? I assume you want to incubate the eggs.
It's weird to me that he wouldn't want to mate in the water. When my pekin have access to water, the fertility rate shoots way up. They're such heavy birds that it's much easier for them to do the deed when they have the water to hold them up versus on the ground when they're constantly struggling to stay on the other duck's back.
