Why in all the chicken books....

Salmonella is not airborne. You’d have to lick your fingers, kiss your chickens’ butt, eat food that you’ve touched with your bare hands that you also touched the chickens with or food you’ve dropped on the ground in their run. Not all chickens carry it either. Just was your hands as you would after you use the bathroom yourself or clean the litter box and you will be just fine. Bottom line is that animal feces of any species has things in it that would not be healthy for you if they contaminated your food.

Hmm... my only guess would be that a vet might be able to tell with a stool sample, but I'm really not sure if that's something they can test for

Thanks, but just so you know, I completely agree that you can hold a chicken now! I feel way more comfortable being around them now!

Oh good! I can't say that all chickens will ever genuinely enjoy being held, but it's important for them to trust you enough that if you needed to catch and hold one for any reason that you can safely do it. I don't hold/snuggle/pet my chickens, but if one escapes I can pretty easily pick it up and put it back in the run, or if one is ill, I can pick it up to treat it without much issue.
