Why is it...?

I took a hen out of the broody breaker this past Saturday and it looks like another one will be going in there real soon. Those two have been alternating going broody all spring and summer, it's time for them to give it up. Between them they've already raised 25 chicks this year.

I don't need any more chicks this year, I don't want any more. Besides my rooster has given me a lot of broth this past month (canned 18 pints today) and his son isn't up to the job yet. No fertile eggs. Come on girls, GIVE IT UP!

Sour, have you ever noticed how it's always a mans fault, even if a man is not involved?

:yuckyuck That's an easy one. Because there is always a woman around to distract you at that important moment and then ladle out the blame? :barnie

Yes, dear. I love you too! Coming up on 25 years of wedded bliss for us. I know I'm happy because she keeps telling me that I am.:love

Why is it.......that everytime I fall in love with a chick, it turns into a little cockerel!!:he:barnie:hit:mad:
I know what you mean about falling for a special chick turning out to be a cockral.. I have 2 of those, and both are a pain in my tail feathers now... Ameraucana and a crazy Polish

sigh I always have broodies in the fall.. I was excited that one hatched 12 on 4th of July... 11 hatch on Labor day ..Have some due Nov 1 st. I have to incubate in the spring EVERY YEAR!!!
But I do have good eating cockerels spaced out through the year LOL
You have holiday hens I guess!!

Here's something I've wondered about.

Why is it that that one particular bird that you're most fond of is the one that gets hurt or sick or taken out by a predator?
Yes! My favorite hen got killed by a hawk last year. :he

I know! My favorite chickens always die or leave me in the most heart wrenching ways known to man. Boots the salmon Faverolle and Buff the buff orpington, two of the sweetest burds ever, both died on my birthday from sickness, Sunny, the black australorp chick I helped hatch, died from pneumonia in my hands, Midnight the other Black Australorp was the nicest, friendliest, spunkiest chick in the bunch, had to go and be a cockerel, Cutie and Miss Pufferson, the adorable buff orps, went and got eaten by a bear.
I'm almost in tears right now. It still hurts. Why do you die, chickies!?!?!?
Sorry, that got a lot longer than I realized.

Eaten by a BEAR? Whoa. I'm so sorry for all of it. It's hard to lose your favorites, particularly when they're your favorites.
