Why is my Pekin duck "sneezing"?

How is she worse?

-Kathy
I somehow missed this post. I'm going to respond to it here, but all of you who are following this, please let me know if I should move this to another thread. I don't want to hijack the OP's thread.

The wheezing seems to me to be getting worse, but the hubby isn't sure about that. Last night, she was doing a lot of the open mouth panting that you can see with respiratory issues but also with a variety of other things that are benign. Scott said she was having vision problems, but I did a good bit of testing and couldn't find any evidence of that. Her eyes did look reddish around the perimeter, like she'd been exposed to some sort of irritant, which she hasn't. We've had her isolated for days because this stupid med is a powder that's added to the drinking water. I hate those because there's no way to know how much medication they're getting.

Because I was afraid she might be having a negative reaction to the doxycycline, I dumped her drinking water and gave her a dish of water with only some NutriDrench in it and a little VetRx floated on top. She has seemed better today in that she seems to be back to where she was this time yesterday. I'm very worried about this and waiting to hear back from the vet.

No it's not especially because animals and humans alike have been so heavily medicated in the past years. That's why I really want something that can be dosed only to her. If the rest don't need it, I don't want them to have it, you know?
When it comes to antibiotics, I only treat the sick ones, never the whole flock.

Is she eating and drinking normally?

-Kathy

Yes, she has been all along other than last night. I just checked her again and she seems to be about like she was yesterday morning, but the wheezing doesn't seem as bad. I couldn't detect any just now when I pressed around on her chest, and that was definitely there a couple of days ago. I can't tell her quack is any more normal, but the hubby says it is. To me, she sounds more like she now has a stuffy nose than a rattly chest, but she's not having any discharge from her nares or eyes, and she doesn't have the redness around her eyes that she had last night. I still haven't restarted the doxy, though, because I'm afraid to do that unless somebody who knows what they're talking about tells me the distress she was in last night wasn't a reaction to it.

My hen definitely does not have a normal quack, she almost sounds more like a male Pekin. She never did have any labored breathing as far as having her mouth open, even when she decides to waddle from one end of the yard to the other (4 acres).

Have you googled doxy side effects?

-Kathy

Yes, I did that last night as soon as the hubby said she was having vision problems. The first thing on the "call your doctor if" was changes in vision, and another was shortness of breath. That's what led me to take the doxy away. I could find no vision problems at all afterward, and I don't know that she was actually short of breath since so many things can cause panting in ducks, even stress/anxiety. I'm just afraid to take the chance with it until we can see the vet.
