Why isn't more turkey eaten year-round? Informal survey.

If you are talking about people who raise their own turkeys, I think it would be because they are normally not ready to process until this time of year. But as for store bought turkey I guess I whole turkey is a little large for most people even the tiny ones. I think turkey breasts for cutlets is great. As for ground turkey, I personally have an aversion to it because every single time I buy it it has all these little bits of bones or something hard throughout which you don't notice until you are eating it and yet I continue to buy it like that is going to change I think part of the reason may be that my grandmother, who lives in italy, made turkeyy meatballs all the time. They were light and really delicious but I also discovered that her ground turkey comes from the butcher and he cuts up the meat and grinds it up to order so maybe that's why it was better there? I guess I could find a butcher like that here but that's more work than it's worth.

We eat turkey once or twice a month. Actually our menu's are alot of poultry. Between chicken, duck, quail, turkey and figure in leftover meals that's a week worth there for us. Pheasants are still special meals but next year we will have more of them.

Venision has pretty much taken the place of beef, so all we buy is pork.

Anyway, I think people would eat more turkey if it was promoted better. Most people only know the whole bird thing that they eat until they are sick of it. Also for the producers it's a dollar thing. $4 a pound ish for turkey breast lunch meat.

Our publix store has turkey cut into legs, wings, and breast all year long. The ground turkey is less expensive than beef or chicken. It makes a fabulous chili. We eat it a lot. Right after Thanksgiving and Christmas we buy whole turkeys and turkey breasts on sale and fill the freezer- if we can. It isn't about tradition as much as price and availability.
Poinsettias normally do not bloom during Christmas. You have to trick them into blooming then. At one time they had developed peach sails, and rose wings and all kind of simply splendid varieties of poinsettia. Europe will buy them all year long. any color. Americans want red. and they want them at Christmas. A poinsettia and five dollars will buy you a five dollar cup of coffee on the 26. but it was just as lovely on the 25.
I can't tell you. ask Madison Avenue. They seem to run the American mind.
but this site isn't real typical you know.

I checked at the local grocery store today, in the meat section. They had whole turkeys and turkey breasts. Nothing else. I'll have to check after the Thanksgiving season because that may be affecting the offerings.

Also, they didn't even have whole chickens, just cut up parts. But they did have ground chicken, which was new to me. I wonder if it has those bones ground in with it, or if they de-bone it first before grinding.

Yummy and I can eat more since it is healthier...

I looked again in the whole entire meat section of the local grocery store... they DID have randy-looking turkey drumsticks for sale separately. They did not look at ALL fresh or appetizing though!!

I read a single post about 5 years ago before I even had a turkey that might explain why legs are less available and more expensive now. Apparently the legs were once almost byproduct in growing breasts for sandwiches etc. More recently the legs have been used for the turkey jerky and bacon products at higher profit than sold as parts. Don't know if thats fact but it sure makes sense.
