Why quail?

We got them for meat and eggs, because we are trying to live a more self-sustainable lifestyle, but the bonus we have gotten out of raising coturnix quail is how much it is teaching our children (well, and us too) about life. Since we got our quail, chickens and goats I don't have to try to explain the "birds and the bees" to my kids, I just let the birds and the bees (we don't really have those, not yet anyway) explain it. They understand that meat doesn't just come from the grocery store, too, and that we take care of our animals in order for them to provide us with meat and eggs.

Pickled quail eggs are the best thing ever!!! My kids love having the little eggs boiled for breakfast and snacks, too.

We went with coturnix because we are a pretty "short attention span" bunch. I love the fact that only six weeks out of the incubator you have meat or eggs....

I got mine for meat too.


But my husband fell in love with them and won't let me butcher them!!. He loves to set out for the quail run and listen to them "talk" to each other. Very calming.

Y'ALL FORGOT A USE--- ALBEIT MORE TOWARDS BOB WHITE THAN COTURNIX.... TRAINING! MANY UPLAND GAME BIRD HUNTERS WANT TRAINER QUAIL--- THEY ARE USED TO TRAIN YOUNG DOGS WITH. MORE SPECIFICALLY USE OF A WING ON THE END OF A FISHING LINE ATTACHED TO A POLE TO GET THE DOGS ATTENTION AS A YOUNG PUP AS WELL AS SCENT TRAINING, THEN THE ADULT BIRDS CAN BE "LAUNCHED" FROM A SPECIAL TRAINING CAGE THAT IS SET AFIELD WITH A BIRD OR BIRDS LOADED INTO IT. IT IS SPRING LOADED PLATFORM THAT WHEN TRIGGERED BY THE TRAINER ACTUALLY LAUNCHES THE QUAIL INTO THE AIR--- THIS IS DONE AFTER THE YOUNG DOG SCENT TRAILS TO THEIR LOCATION AND HAS "POINTED THE BIRD. UPON VERBAL COMMAND FROM THE TRAINER THE DOG "FLUSHES THE BIRD(TRAP IS TRIGGERED AND THE QUAIL "FLUSH" OR TAKE FLIGHT, THUS TRAINING THE YOUNG DOG TO TRAIL/ POINT/ AND FLUSH ON COMMAND. USUALLY THESE SAME DOG TRAINERS WILL KEEP QUAIL IN FLIGHT PENS AND THEY ATTEMPT TO RETRIEVE THE TRAINING BIRDS BY USE OF A LIVE TRAP, AND THE BIRD CAN THEN BE RE-USED LATER.

ALSO THERE ARE MANY PAY - TO - HUNT FARMS OR PLANTATIONS THAT STOCK QUAIL FOR HUNTERS TO PAY TO HUNT THEM ON THE PRESERVE
