Why soy free?? (And the effects of soy)

I don't think the organic steamed edeme and miso soup with some tofu in the bottom will make you fat at least.
Here is a fat chart.

US #1 Japan #28

I think it is the hot dogs, and soy as an additive to half the foods we eat.

Hmmm come to think of it Japan does have a very low birth rate... Wonder if that is from the said hormonal issues with soy....??
(Sorry just could not resist the "jab" at the pro soy crowd..)

Seriously this is wonderful and informative discussion and I value all the different viewpoints.

ON

They do not eat processed soy in Japan.
When its fermented properly, it does not have an affect on the thyroid and fertility.
Birth rates have more to do with population control.

Lets look at it from this angle.

Japan doesn't eat soy like we do.

They have a low fertility rate.

We increase soy in our chicken feed to up the protein.

Increased protein is what breeders suggest for higher fertility.

One case where soy is good!!!!

i'm actually eating so MUCH BETTER after giving up "industrial food," and for a little bit less money too (i'm buying smarter, not wasting things). fresh, yummy homemade food EVERY DAY!?! it's wonderful. i do a lot of cooking for the week on Sundays and freeze things so i can just grab something and pop it in the oven or the crock pot and i'm good to go. it's fantastic.

i love edamame, too. i would love to eat it daily, but i can't. you just can't get soy moderation while eating industrial food. tofu is a bit of a grey area: fermented tofu (pickled or stinky) should be completely fine. other forms of tofu are probably exponentially better than soy the way we consume it in the US. but again, moderation is key- i seriously worry about my vegan friends who live on tofu.

i just found this article that seems to be fairly middle of the road when it comes to soy (maybe even leaning a little towards the pro side) and it had this information that i found pertinent:

Fallon and Enig make much of a 1985 study which showed that soy increases the risk of pancreatic cancer in rats. But researchers with the National Cancer Institute point out that the pancreas of a few species of animals, notably rats and chicks, are extraordinarily sensitive to dietary protease inhibitors such as those found in soy.

so... maybe at the very, very least we should avoid feeding soy to chicks?

Thanks for posting that Leah.

I like the middle of the road articles. There are too many extremists in both directions. If I can find a middle of the road solution and keep myself in good shape, I don't think any soy, corn, or favorite brew will take me out. Hasn't yet anyway

For every "source" you come up with I can find one to counter it. Trust me, I know how to google. I'm not going to waste my time. How about common sense. Look at India and China and other third world countries including Mexico, or better yet, look how all the major cities in the world have grown over the past fifty years. And please don't try and argue that cities' growth is only because of people moving from rural areas. I see rural areas disappearing also. Yes, I see it with my own eyes. I don't need a "source" in writing to know it's happening. For a libertarian you have some radical ideas-some good ones I will admit. I think your argument on global warming is right on-but, that argument can also be countered with different "sources."
Just to keep on topic-soy, soy, soy.

I post my sources so people can independently check them out for themselves. There are counter-arguments to every argument. You have to look in to where each source gets their information and decide for yourself who you trust.

I don't trust the overpopulation crowd as far as I can throw them. Strangely enough, the people pushing the over-population idea are the same ones that push global warming. Their solution is the same. Some of us have to die...but not them. http://climategate.tv/?p=776

Thank you, that's awesome information. I have been wondering what I can plant to supplement the chicken feed.

I don't know what to say.. Pretty sure I do not share wifezilla's opinion, nor find the extremist link useful.

Though both global warming and world over population are both closely related to the subject of soy, I think the should have their own threads started. (It would be a fun debate.. I do enjoy debating and learning with you fowl folks...
