I started digging and looking for more info on poultry feed. I tracked down who had animal protein in their feed and I switched. In short order feather development improved, over all condition was much improved and even my white birds had an iridescence that was not there before the animal protein feed.

So I can attest to an actual before and after result.

Same here. It was more apparent in my quail than my ducks. Quail have a much higher protein need, so an inferior protein is more likely to effect them.

We switched over to soy free and have been on it for a week now. Field peas and fish meal are the primary protein boosters. I have noticed an increase in the smell of the poop. One of our girls started laying on Saturday and all the eggs have been with orange yolks, great shells, and were very tasty. Granted, it's only been a week, but I think they are doing well on it.
