I am a BIG proponent for teaching an important lesson. I would never shoot an animal for fairness but the person responsible needs to understand that it is unacceptable and why. My hubby and friends know me as an outspoken person who although short in stature (4'11") I am big on fairness--even if its not in my best interest.

Where I grew up, we had a name for this sort of vermin. We call 'em Yard Apes. No age or gender specified, but when the shoe fits, you know it.

A few years ago, one of my goats turned up mysteriously dead one morning. Blood around her mouth and nose, no obvious signs of other injuries. The temperature was heading into the upper 90's, I had a busy day scheduled, so Hubby and I dug a hole, shoved her into it, and got on with our respective days. A week or so later, I heard a news story about an Akita that was being kept in a horse pasture maybe half a mile from here. The owner had taken the dog to the vet, where it was x-rayed for some reason. They were horrified to realize that the dog was absolutely riddled with pellets from a pellet gun! They said they had noticed a small sore on the dog from time to time, but had blamed it on flies, or briars, that kind of thing. Whoever had shot the dog had evidently done it repeatedly over the course of some time. I wasn't about to exhume the goat's body to do a more detailed check, but I wondered. . . .

Or not. A lot of serial killers start out this way. Then they graduate to people.

Oh, TXMom, I am so, so sorry.

My teen DD was horrified, and is now asking about game cameras for our place (knuckleheads every so often walk THROUGH our fenced yard).

Weird question: From the angle of the bullet hole in your poor girl, can you possibly figure out what direction the bullet might have gone in? Look for dinks in the ground- bullets will turn up in the oddest places.

Is there a metal detector club in your area? A shop that buys gold and silver would probably know who has a metal dectector.

I am so so sorry for you, and I hope you find the rotten people who did this!

I think we all watch a little too much CSI, don't we? I thought of the same things...but I don't think there's any way to tell the direction. It appears the bullet went in her right side and out her left side, but she was laying flat on the ground so there's no way to know which way she was actually standing. If you're looking at my property, the car drove from the left to the right, but they could have been on the left side and shot at her toward the right, or they could have been directly in front of her and shot straight back, or they could have been to the right of her shooting toward the left...there's no way to tell. I've walked the the entire fence line by the street and also the other side of the yard and I don't see any damage to the T-posts or wire fence. My property isn't very deep off of the street, it's more wide, so the bullets probably travelled past my property and into neighboring property.

Believe me, I'd love to find a bullet, and I have looked, but I don't think it will happen. My husband even looked for shell casings on the street and in the ditches but didn't find any. Maybe we'll go out and look again because they sure didn't have time to pick them up. Maybe they just landed in the car, I don't know. It's worse than a needle in a hay stack.

Honestly the odds of finding any shell casings (if it is a .22 or similar caliber weapon) are very slim. Also it is possible that it was not intentionally aimed at your chicken, it is highly possible it might be a ricochet off something. Even if it was accidental I'm still ticked off at stupid people who do this. I'm a gun nut and this is the kind of stuff that gets everyone who keeps weapons in trouble.

Sorry about the loss of your chicken, it's hard when it's natural s I know it must be even worse.

I wish it was an "accident"...but it wasn't. There's nothing legitimate to be shooting at over here. The car stopped or at least slowed down, and fired 5 shots right into my yard, then sped off when I opened the door. My house is in the center of my property, and the chicken was just to the left of the house/garage, they had to be shooting into my yard.

I have nothing against gun owners, and I don't think normal gun owners would do something like this. My husband owns a gun and has never shot any living thing with it. This was a sick person (or people) using my chickens as target practice.

Ridiculous that people do something like that. If they want to do that stuff go to a rifle range or just go hunting. Not go and fire on someone's land at their pets.
