It's Sulmet.

My opinion I think that stuff is useless its way to weak and the only way to really for it to take affect is to keep them on it longer. Directions I believe say 7 days but you need 14 days to work and cure the problem.

But i also understand you get what you can at least for the time being something is better then nothing.

Quote: I give Baytril by injection, but I give it in the breast or under the skin. *never* in the leg or thigh. Did any of you see the pictures I posted? There is a reason that birds should be given injections in the upper part of the breast and *not* any where else, it's because the have a renal shunt, which I think means that if the shot is *not*given in the breast, it may not be effective. If the duck was taken to a cat/dog or large animal vet, the vet might not know this. If the duck was taken to a bird vet, I'd wanna know why they wanted the OP (original poster) to give the injection in the leg.

Quote:
IM injections are most commonly given in the pectoral muscles located on either side of the keel bone. Due to the renal shunt of birds, where blood in the lower part of the G.I and caudal extremities may pass directly through the kidneys prior to being filtered by the liver, it is recommended that injections be given in the upper two thirds of the birds’ breast muscling. These muscles also contain a higher number of capillaries making aspiration before giving the injection even more important.

Here are the pictures again:

I don't disagree with giving injections my point was the poor thing already had leg issues from the beginning, perhaps they were unaware of this which would make since seeing how that problem was resolved. But now, she back to square one with the legs, HOPEFULLY she just can't use the legs because of the injections and they are extremely sore now and not a cause from damages caused by the injections... But I don't understand why they just didn't give oral antibiotic, it would be a lot easier.

And i agree I think the injections should be administered in the breast and my guess is when she talks to them, they will say "it doesn't matter where you give it as long as she gets it"... LOL.

When they aren't eating and drinking enough, they're digestive systems aren't working properly, which means that drugs given orally my not be effective, so giving antibiotics by injection would be how I gave them, just not in the leg. And there are other drugs that are always given by injection, so maybe that's part of the equation.

Edited to add:
The penicillin you find at feed stores is always given by injection. Amikacin might be another, but I'm not sure.

What I have seen is when they aren't eating or drinking, as soon as they are giving antibotics, after 24 hours they become a TOTALLY different animal and start improving.. That's when the appetite comes back and they seem to get stronger and stronger.

Injections aren't always necessary in my opinion.. I have giving injections so don't give me wrong.

I give them both ways unless, but will always give Baytril by injection to a critically ill bird. And like I said in the last post, not all antibiotics can be given orally.
