Welcome to the flock. The duck people can give you good advice, if you can't find a rehabber to take him.( always my first recommendation) I would think it would be very helpful for you to post pictures of the little guy, so age and species or breed can be established by those knowledgeable in those matters.

Yep, that looks like a Mallard. Almost certainly a wild mallard.

If you can get him a buddy, go for it. But have you looked for a rehabber first?

EDT: also, their bills lengthen as they age, quite noticeably during the first week. I'd say he's only a few days old, if that.
 
I have emailed a few places as ideally I would like it to be raised with other ducks but no emails back yet.. I googled mallard and that is definitely the species. It is considered a pest species in nz so I dont even know if anyone will take it.. I hope so though!
Rouens look a lot like that as well, but they have darker eye stripes as ducklings.

I know almost everything is considered a pest species in NZ, but what did mallards do that's so bad?
